Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The Parkash Utsav marks the birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the founder of Sikhism. This is one of the most sacred festivals of Sikhs. Guru Nanak Dev ji was born in the village Rai-Bhoi-di-Talwandi (now called Nankana Sahib), near Lahore, Pakistan in1469.

Bhai Gurdas said “Suni Pukaar Dataar Prabh, Guru Nanak Jag Maahe Pathaya”, God heard the wailing of the suffering humanity and sent Guru Nanak in this World. He also said that “Satguru Nanak Pargateya Mitti Dhund Jag Channan Hoya”.

Guru Nanak Dev ji firmly believed in the existence of God. He revealed the meaning of God in Mool Mantra, “Ik Onkar, Sat Naam, Karta Purukh, Nirbhau, Nirvair, Akal Murat, Ajooni saibhang, Gurprasad”. God is one and his existence is true.

Guru ji devoted his entire life spreading God’s message. He denounced meaningless customs, rituals, prejudices and superstitions in the religions. Guru Nanak’s message of love and hope was not only to his own country, but also to the countries like Arabia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Sri-Lanka, Central Asia and parts of China and Tibet.

Guru Nanak Dev ji’s main teachings are understood to be practice in three ways:

(1) Nam Japo:- Chanting the Holy Name and thus remembering God at all times (ceaseless devotion to God);
(2) Kirat Karo:-Earning/making a living honestly, without exploitation or fraud;
(3) Vand Chhakho:- Sharing with others, helping those, who are in need.

Guru Ji brought a social and religious revolution by providing a platform of SANGAT and PANGAT, where people would pray together and eat together irrespective of caste, colour, creed or faith. Guru Nanak Dev ji showed us the path of peace and harmony. His message of devotion to God and excellence of conduct can help us in transforming the society. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s teachings are placed in Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.
