Earth Day Activities at Sri Venkateshwar International School

Young students of Sri VIS, Sector -18 celebrate the Earth's Day

Young ones as young as 3 year olds to senior students and staff, all synergised to safeguard the mother earth. They planted seeds, wrote slogans, made bookmarks, spoke on what they felt was right to do, made props for their plays, did street plays and pledged to be a sincere and responsible citizen. The school urged all to treat the Earth as our mother and let its green cover remain intact and safe.

Crying Delhi

An Open Letter to dear Commissioners/Mayors of three MCDs ,Chairman-NDMC & Honble LG-Delhi.

Sirs/ Madams,
We all know, more than 16 millions people are now living in Delhi. the number is increasing everyday. In addition,to this ,there is floating population too- people who come everyday/ for a few days to Delhi for business/ work/tourism etc & go back to their places of residence.

All of you are BLESSED , LUCKY & PRIVILEGED to be in the key position of the administration/governance of the capital of India. All the people of Delhi look up to you for their everyday civic facilities , better law & order & many many other things which a well governed city like any others of the world offer. Are they getting it?The answer is big NO!!

Why it is so? The answer is lack of commitment, passion & special skills, which the elected representatives, various officers/officials of the various concerned organisations/departments need to have?!!

What are those special skills? These to my mind are EMPATHY, INTEGRITY, PASSION to deliver,Ears to hear the complaints,Eyes to see everyday what is wrong at various places in the city & then dedication to give service before self. Are they doing it, the way,it needs to be done. Are you overseeing it everyday & setting the rudder?Pl ask your self.---

I will give one simple example to clarify, what I am driving at, though,I can give hundreds of these.

Over the last few years, shopping malls have been constructed in various newly developed colonies & old colonies too

Visit any day in these malls. It is FREE for ALL,over there!! There is no semblance of any order what to talk of management /governance!? there is encroachment of public spaces in every possible ways, inside the mall, outside the malls & in the vicinity of the malls?!

The toilets STINK. most of the appurtenances therein are in really bad shape. The spaces allotted/designed for green spaces & are either full with refuse or empty /discarded cartons, broken pieces of various articles & what not. There are dogs all over in various state of activity-eating,running,sleeping at times fighting with each other.Poor shoppers trying their best to get away from all these?

Is this management? What is Traders Welfare Associations doing? What is the assigned staff of the civic bodies doing?

ARE WE PROUD OF THIS?

Pl give it a thought.

Earth Day Greetings

“We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on Earth as its other creatures do.” Environment protection does not happen in a vaccum. You can not separate the impact on the environment from the impact on our families and communities.”

Truth being the same, Earth Day Greetings to you all.

Over the years your unstinted commitment to the cause of Environment has been wonderful and it is certain that you will continue with the same zeal and zest.

The positivity of your actions has started showing results with the tremendous growth in terms of new entrants in different segments and the quantum growth in terms of volume. This sets in a fine example of collectivity of individuals delivering for posterity.

However, this should not catch us unawares as the challenges in the coming year shall be more turbulent and demand a vigorous effort from all of us.

I may like to add here that Earth Day celebrations are as flexible as Mother Earth herself has been to us all despite our wripping her apart and making her bear all the burden Though you may definitely do your bit for her, she being a Mother would never ask for it.

She has bestowed her blessings on the mankind through beautiful and vibrant flowers she bears through wall scaping on the barren walls, drooping downwards in her grandeur from the balcony, sitting pretty on the window sill, coming out from the used tyres, bamboo pipes, splurging out of the small pots on the pathway, in old bath tubs, unused sinks, pots and other sanitary items.

I am sure that none of us will be able to break this strong bond between ourselves and strive for being good guests and learn to walk lightly on Earth as its other creatures do.”

Happy Earth Day once again.

Giraffe Heroes India invites nominations from all over India

The Giraffe Heroes India Program

A Giraffe Hero is a person who sticks his or her neck out on sustainable basis, for public good, at huge personal risk. Giraffe Heroes India Program is an off-shoot of non-profit Giraffe Heroes Project which was started in USA in 1984, by Ann Medlock. The aim of starting this Project was to find out unknown heroes of the society, commend them as Giraffes for sticking their necks out & get their stories told on radio, television & in print. Giraffe stories would tell the people that there was headway being made on the problems of the world, that there were individuals who had solutions & the courage to move into action. The stories would move people`s souls & get them moving on public problems that mattered to them.

”DRESS ME UP FOR MY EARTH”- Fancy Dress Competition

‘play, activity and imitation come naturally to the children’.

Fancy Dress is an art of wearing an amusing and unusual costume as part of a theme. Such a contest stirs the spirit of children and opens up their mind to imagine out of box. Students of Step I & Step II proved this during the two days Fancy Dress Competition held on 18th & 19th April 19, 2018 respectively as they came dressed in most vibrant colours and threw light on theme that stroked the chord of every heart. The theme for the competition was ‘Dress me up for my Earth’.Children were smartly dressed and participated with lot of enthusiasm and enthralled everyone with their beautiful performances. They had shown their concern regarding increase in pollution, depletion of water etc. through rhymes and thoughts. This activity provided them an opportunity to not only showcase their talent but they could also combat stage fright with great zeal. The judges for the event Ms Namita Mangla and Ms. Meenakshi Sharma were amazed at the performances of the li’l ones. They also appreciated the efforts of the school for providing such platform to the students that help them to build self confidence.

WHY OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD/LOCALITIES are DIRTY?

During the last week, every morning, I took some time out at the start of the day,to write six brief articles sharing therein my experiences/views about the possible ways a city/locality could be maintained in a better manner,As we all know, there is huge scope of improvement in having better designed, constructed, maintained ,infrastructure around our houses/offices/markets. There in my` pieces` I also exhorted the readers, to as well , share their experiences & make small groups in their own neighbourhood to take up the matter also with the concerned officials of the local authorities, utility companies & the members of the community to plug the deficiencies & also to render help in supervising small activities like the state of garbage management, footpaths & road repairs, tending of green spaces/trees, reporting about encroachment in public spaces which were causing big obstructions in the movement of shoppers/walkers et al.

I sent these articles to social media & to some of my known contacts, who I felt, were quite active in various civic issues & had been discussing vociferously about the sad state of civic affairs & the inefficiency of the civic officials & I felt had zeal to bring about change by contributing their mite too.

My only purpose of doing this morning `exercise` was to contribute in whatever little way in improving our neighbourhoods.

Well,to share with you, very encouraging & positive responses were received from a few but most have stayed away from any responses/suggestions?!

That is a proof enough to INDICATE WHY OUR LOCALITIES,MARKETS,SHOPPING MALLS, PARKS, FOOTPATHS,ROADS are in the state, we all find these in, day in day out & all keep ruing about the same.

Be in your child’s life: TODAY

Jaspreet Kaur, Vice Principal -Bal Bhavan International School, Sector 12,Dwarka
Today the Youngsters need to know and understand themselves first, their potential, their feelings and emotions, their position in life and in society and their strengths and weaknesses. They need to have a clear sense of their own identity.

“Parents are a child’s first teachers and role models” They are responsible for shaping up the child’s behavior and implementing positive values in them. Children listen, observe and imitate their parents. So it is important that they should be good role models the kids would want to follow.

All parents want to raise their children in such a way that they grow up to become happy and functional adults. As a parent we try to provide everything to our children. However, along with facilities and luxuries there are many things in life that are very important. Education is very important in one’s life, but to be self-sufficient adult, our child should learn some life skills, which is need of the hour.

The term life skills describe a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life. They include creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, the ability to communicate and collaborate, along with personal and social responsibility that contribute to good citizenship.

Many of us take life skills for granted. But the fact is life skill helps children become independent and live life smoothly. Here are some life skills, that parents can take up to bring up a positive turnover:

· These days there is cutthroat of competition in outside world and we need to prepare our child face it effectively. For this he or she should be able to think critically so that he or she is capable of observing and analysing any kind of situation to come up with smart solutions.

· Let’s make our child understand the importance of being organized and set some rules for them. We might feel tempted to set up a messed room, but resist; let your child take responsibility and be organized.

· Social skill is the basic life skill that should be taught right from the time child is a toddler. Let your child learn how to play well with others because when he will grow up he will be able to handle teamwork successfully and interact with other more efficiently and impressively.

· Respecting elders is something we would want a kid to build as his etiquette. Help him via setting an example.

· Parents should practise what they preach to their children and avoid hypocrisy at all times when it comes to various situations, dealing with other people in the family or relations.

The parents’ role should be to expose children to various situations and people that build their confidence, self-esteem and boost their power to distinguish between the correct and incorrect to build their integrity.

The formal education system, today has also tended to prioritise knowledge at the expense of other aspects of our personalities, believing that an increase in knowledge will automatically lead to positive changes in attitudes and behaviours.

Parenting is nothing short of a challenging experience and it isn’t a smooth road, lot of turbulence on the way. But we will be able to handle everything wonderfully if we just keep calm and deal with our child in the right way. Always be mindful of the fact that being too strict or too easy isn’t going to help. Finding a balance is the best way to handle any situation. Be Communicative. Remember that your child’s good habits always begin at home. A good habit for children helps your child grow up soon and be a wonderful and successful human being. Be a mentor to your child always.

Remember: Children close their ears to advice,
but open their eyes to example.

Prescription for BETTER Neighbourhood

CRITICISE LESS, ACT[positively] MORE

It has been my observation & most of you must have observed, the same, too, that in any situation of civic-neglect viz pot-holed roads, broken footpaths, ill-maintained green spaces, leaking water-pipes, non-functional traffic signals, mounting garbage on streets,dog- pooh at various places in the neighbour hood, we all go on high-drive in criticising, criticising & criticising the officials/management of local bodies, DDA & various utilities. We criticise them whenever, we gather in the park during morning walk, we criticise, when we meet at any social get-togethers & we criticise, when we talk on mobile or sometime on whatsapp!

The healthy elders who have lot of time on their hands stay longer in the parks & there panel-discussions,seminars, amongst, them on the in-efficiency of the civic officials are held in great detail! There are exceptions too,In some of the groups? A few elders amongst many in their groups, take positive actions. contact the concerned officials, follow up & also help the workers in various ways & get the problems sorted out amicably in a time bound manner!

But ,majority are experts in giving their views/expert advice on the mis-management of funds/for changing the situations on the ground.

Why,they do it? Why, they keep on criticising? Why, they do not form small groups amongst themselves to follow up with various civic authorities.

I have no doubt, their problems will receive the solutions, in lesser time than expected!

Having been in the local government,my experience is, there are sometime, problems within the various departments of a local body/Utility companies et al.I do not hold a brief for their in efficiency. It is also a fact that there are, also, many instances of unethical practices being followed by some of the officials/elected reps/contractors, but CRITICISING only will not solve the problem but, may/will aggravate the situation.

So the rule of the game should be, ACT POSITIVELY ,CRITICISE LESS.

It will have good effect on all-employees, your own children ,your public- areas of neglect.

Things will start improving?~

TRY it for a MONTH---------------,dear all.

This is my prescription for obtaining better civic facilities/improving the quality of life in & around your neighbourhood.

Instead of `sudharofying` the world, first bring improvement around you.

CARING AUTHORITIES,RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

LET US be CARING AUTHORITIES & RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

I live in sector 22 of Dwarka. My apartment, located on the service road parallel to the main road leading to metro station, is not very far from Sector 21 Metro station. It is just about less than 10 minutes walk.About three years back, this service road was hardly trafficked road.over the years, this has become very busy road.rickshaws,e-rickshaws,two-wheelers. four wheelers, ply on this stretch with gay abandon. besides,high-rise construction,on one of the plot, has aggravated the situation, what with trucks bringing in building materials & taking out some construction waste et al. The quiet area has become noisy what with a five star hotel on this road & its attendent functions from time to time,& more traffic on the main road

But, the urbanisation malaise just does not end here. The problems of many kinds have cropped up out side the Metro station.Rickshaws,e-rickshaws,scooters, are parked on both sides of the road/service roads crating may-hem at all times of the day.At this station, two lines[Airport Express.Yellow line] terminate, so,number of commuters have increased manifold.Lot many bring their cars/two wheelers etc & park it whereever they get any parking place & take the metro.Vehicles keep parked, till they return.Result-clogging of narrow service roads, mayhem in the allotted parking area etc etc. With lot many using this station one corne,in particular, near the entrance remains full of garbage of all kinds giving not only ugly look but is a sad reflection of the efficient METRO Management whose standards are expected to be everytime better than other agencies.Entrance footpaths/ road-stretch are broken/remain unattended for days/months together. This is SAD .there is mushrooming of hawkers/sale outlets of various kinds outside on all the flanking roads. In the morning & evening, buses etc also disgorge their occupants creating a messier area.

This state of affairs prevails now at almost all the entry & exit points of METRO STATIONS?!

WHY?
Concerned authorities & Citizens-ask your self,pl
When will, we all become responsible & caring towards public areas/properties?
