To meet the growing risk and school safety challenges the various educational institute counsellors have suggested setting up of Risk assessment Teams in schools and colleges to prevent Ryan International School and other school type of incidents .
More than 200 School counsellors taking part in the National Convention of School Counsellor’s here today felt that post Ryan International School incident their role has become more challenging as apart from traditional academic failure and physical bullying threat newer threats have propped up in recent times including cyber bullying, mental, parents pressure , Blue whale online game and alienation and digital challenge.
“At present very few schools have counsellors and those that have take the work of an event organizer rather than life skills counsellor . To meet the newer challenges and better school safety ‘Risk Management Teams ‘ are needed in educational institutes as an alternative to zero tolerance discipline policies that have proven to be ineffective and counterproductive. The role of Threat assessment team will be violence prevention strategy that involves: identifying student and school staff threats to commit a violent act, determining the seriousness of the threat, and developing intervention plans that protect potential victims and address the underlying problem or conflict that stimulated the threatening behaviour. The goals of threat assessment are to keep schools safe and to help potential offenders overcome the underlying sources of their anger, hopelessness, or despair.” Said Dr A.S Ravindran , an eminent counselling psychologist.
“Effective threat assessment provides school professionals with useful information about a student's risks and personal resources. Among the other potential student risks that can be identified and prevented are suicide, sex, alcohol and drug use, physical abuse, dropping out, and criminal activity.” He said.
“The Blue whale online challenge game threat should not be tackled by grounding internet and cyber activities of a child , it should be done by changing net behaviour as future of student’s now world ide is checked and assessed through net behaviour. Admissions in US and UK universities are done after assessing and checking net behaviour through social media” said Dr Ravindran..
“Another factor that needs to be changed is considering humanities student’s inferior to science students especially in higher classes. The new avenues which are creative .Traditionally Indian parents don't want their children to be creative, they fear a lot that while doing so their child might fail and not get over it. They prefer their children to take up Science or Commerce while being an actor, choreographer, photographer , designer or taking up any such profession, requires much more effort, will power, and patience. “ said Ms Nien Siao , Campus Director Arch, Academy of Design, Gurgaon Campus while speaking at the Convention.
“ Demand for creative people in the domestic and international industry is on increase Under graduate courses courses in Design: Fashion & Textile, Interior, Product, Jewellery, Graphics & Interaction, Communication Design, Styling and Entrepreneurship are in rise .The humanities should not be skipped “ said Ms Siao.
“The Arch Academy of Design is being set up in the IT hub of Gurgaon. Arch is reputed as a center for education with global faculty to inspire and prepare future leaders in design characterized by creative thinking, innovation and the ability to transform the future. Fashion & Lifestyle are some of the most creative industries in the world with more than 50 million people involved world wide having a turnover in excess of 3 trillion dollars” She added.
