Love it or Leave it

-Commander VK Jaitly

Last week, while delivering a talk to a gathering of about 100+ young professionals, one young lady asked a question that she was not liking her job. What she should do?

My crisp reply was “Love it or Leave it”. She got a mild shock with the crisp reply from me.

I further elaborated in detail what I meant. I am of the view that many of us land up in a job or a career that is not of our choice. We may have got into that because of the pressure from our parents or the peers or the teachers. It is also possible that we tried to get into a job of our liking but didn’t get selected. So in order to make both ends meet and support our family we picked up a job that may not be of our choice and liking. There are very few people in this world with a safety net of very strong backing from their parents and other family members. Such people can afford to even remain without jobs for months and even years till they get something of their interest. Majority of the people belong to middle class and they don’t have the luxury to reject jobs but tend to accept whatever comes their way and is offered to them. The moment they finish their studies, some source of income is the dire need for them to support their families.

In a large number of cases, we, the middle class people don’t have a choice to shift our job because of a large number of constraints. May be because of our qualification limitations, we don’t have many options. OR because of family problems, we are not able to shift to a different city or a country for picking up a new job. OR we don’t have the confidence to accept new challenges of a new job in a new location. In such cases, it is in our interest to start liking our job and in fact love our job and genuinely love the job we are doing. It is not very difficult to persuade your mind to get into the mould that has been offered to you. It is a matter of a bit of self-suggestion whether you wish to like something or dislike it.

Remember that those who love their jobs, start excelling in that and such people never get tired while performing their duties. You get tired only when you keep cribbing and complaining about your job, about the environment, about your boss and about your colleagues. When you know that you don’t have an alternative, better love it. And if you do have an alternative, why to stick on with something you don’t like. Just have the courage to leave it and go for the alternative.

I did some further thinking on this quote by me: “Love it or Leave it”. If your son or daughter is in a school that he/she is not comfortable with. It may be because of any reason. He/She may not like the teachers, or the friend circle or the environment or lack of facilities. Whatever may be the reasons, if your children don’t love their school, they must leave it and go to a school that they genuinely love. Only then they shall excel in studies, sports and other extra-curricular activities. And if you feel that changing the school is just not possible because of some constraints, then go for proper counselling in such a way that they start liking their present school. You may have to talk to their teacher/principal and even some classmates so that they start loving their school. Only then their performance will improve.

Let us take another common example. You shift to a new flat in a new colony and may be in a new city. And all the time you keep remembering your old flat, old neighbours and the nearby Kirana Wallah etc and then keep comparing with the lack of all that good stuff in the present new flat in the new colony. Your mind keeps cursing your own bad luck. Can you lead a happy life in this new set up? The answer is a big ‘NO’.

You have to do conditioning of your mind to start liking the new environment, new neighbours, new facilities and new locality. After all, you must have shifted in this new flat because of some good reasons. Look for all the positives in the new set up and better start loving it and only then you will be able to live in peace. And because of any reason, if you are not able to love it then better leave it. Go back to the old place or go to some place which you are 100% sure that you shall like it and love it.

Now it may also happen that between husband and wife, one of them likes the new flat and the other one wants to go back to the earlier one. This is a very complex situation. I will not say that one of them should sacrifice for the sake of other one and relent to the desire of the other. Many times, we tend to stick around with what we are used to. We tend to resist change. Though most of the time the Change may be for good in the long run. So in case of a conflict of choice between husband and wife, they should make a list of attributes for the two dwellings in question and then allot points out of 10 for each of the attribute and see which choice gets more points and go for that. The points to be allotted for each attribute may also differ according to wife and the husband. So in this case, take the help of a common friend whose judgement is respected by both to allot points for the attributes where there is a difference of opinion.

The idea is that we should not be too rigid in our approach. As the opportunities come your way, make the best use of them. Love the present job while you are at it. Commit your full energy to contribute your best till the last day at that job. Be on the lookout for better opportunities and leave the old job only if the new one is substantially better and you are convinced that it shall be good for your growth and you are going to love it. So leave the old one and love the new one. But let the departure from the old job be also in good taste and on a happy note. Your true well-wishers and good friends will always be happy when you progress in life even when you go far away from them. They will miss you, your good nature and your good behaviour but accept it as a part of life willingly. Let this be your mantra for a happier life.

“Love it or Leave it” formula can be applied in so many areas of your life. Be magnanimous to love your family members, friends and neighbours. Remove the word ‘hatred’ from your dictionary. You may come across some situations sometimes when someone crosses all the limits of decency and decorum that disturbs you to the extent that you wish to dump that someone to the dustbin. Take this as a test of your own patience and decency. Maintain a cool and composed posture. Don’t lose your temper.

It is you who have to decide now that you cannot ‘Love him or her’ anymore as all your best efforts have gone waste. So you will have to decide to ‘Leave him or her’. Don’t be in a hurry to make such decisions of personal nature. Look at all the pros and cons before you take the final call on “Love it or Leave it”. But do remember this formula.

With India entering into its next phase of growth, it is expected to add 110 million people to its workforce in the next ten years’, including youth and women.

Vijay K. Saluja

Have you ever given a thought-dear residents, as to what makes our colonies dirty? Why, there are so many stray dogs, around your flats or inside the gardens? Why cows & bulls keep on sitting on or near the dividers of roads, many a no of times in the day, weave through the busy traffic, to cross over to the other side of the road? Why various green spaces provided in various sectors of colonies are ill maintained- at times, no greenery or just patch of earth, play equipments –broken, non-operational?

Why, a road repaired after a long time, is again dug up for laying another utility? How much inconvenience it causes to the public? Loss of exchequer, environmental pollution, traffic jams are some of the many side effects of these mindless ill co-ordinated jobs.

Have a look at another commonly seen, scenario.

Big crowd collected around a person[bleeding at many places], who has been hit by a vehicle driven recklessly, and then the crowd thinning away, each one thanking the Almighty, that the person involved was not one of their near & dear one! The bleeding man [or woman] kept on, at or near the accident site, as many wondering, that their reporting the incident might, not bring them some hassles/harassment of any kind from the police.?!

But, ask yourself, honestly a question. Why all this is happening, day in day out, in our colonies, markets, cities.

Why not much is being done to arrest the situation? Why day in day out, despite media `s reporting about harassment to girls/women, & any many snatching/theft incidents, there is no tangible improvement in the situation.

Infact, as reported, there is further deterioration in the state of affairs. The Authorities lament about the lack of resources, multiplicity of authority & lack of co-ordination, politics, apathy of the citizens etc etc. There are excuses galore-you name it & and it is there.

But my humble query to the concerned authorities, RWAs, elected representatives & the general public is-Are we doing enough to correct the situation or just discussing & passing the blame. To the authorities, I will like to submit, that as problems of cities will keep on occuring every minute-cities being dynamic entities, the need is to think of innovative or out of box solutions to the various problems.

To my mind, citizen is a big resource for the authorities to complement & supplement their efforts in managing the cities.

What is needed is the positive attitude, the will power of the officials/local representatives/police, to mobilize citizenry in a proper way.

Running a local body is not like working in a normal govt office or secretariat. Here, what is expected of its employees is a different work culture, empathy with the citizen`s difficulties & eagerness to solve the same, within a given time frame. If there is no electricity or water or the storm water/ sewage line is choked, then the file dealing with it needs to be cleared quickly on hourly basis & not like any any other ordinary file, which at times remain unattended for days together! Decision making has to be quick.

All this needs induction of right people with proper education , regular on the job skill- upgradation in the local bodies/development authorities/ neighbourhood police. They also must have the ability to forge close links with the community & actively seek their co operation in supplementing their efforts. Unless, this is done, I, do not see any ray of hope, in perceptible improvement of the state of our cities, & its colonies .

The chief minister of Delhi & its local bodies, to my mind, need to appoint an exclusive Director[community relations] in each local body-NDMC,MCD,DDA & Delhi Govt, DJB,to maintain close liaison with the community, listen to their grievances & address their issues effectively in a given time-frame.

As issues & problems of a city esp a mega-city like Delhi are enormous & get thrown up everyday, it is felt, MCDs need to have an exclusive TV channel of its own like `DELHI-CHANNEL` or simply named `MCD` like NDTV . This should run twenty four hours & telecast all issues, news, problems about Delhi & various efforts made by various authorities to bring about improvement & better maintenance etc etc. Various areas/subjects- basic services, culture, education, encroachment, entertainment, health, infrastructure, can be discussed in various formats-panel discussions, seminars, talks, school-college debates, meet the public programmes etc etc.

Many social happenings, cultural programmes of the city can also be telecast regularly.

What is needed is a fertile imagination, the positive attitude & the will of the authorities. Rest –positive things will follow.

There are endless possibilities of positive engagements with the public.

It can also be a great source of revenue for the civic body, by way of getting advertisements, besides MCD, making close rapport with the citizenry.

Just think about it- the hon`ble LG-Delhi, the young chief minister, all the political parties & the CEOS of the local bodies.

Tommorow ie on 23th April 2017, the citizens of Delhi are going to vote for choosing competent corporators for three Municipal Corporations of Delhi-East, North & South.

May God give `Buddhi` & `SANMATI`[good sense] to all the voters to vote for the competent candidate!

Happy Birthday- Babita

Global Road Safety Body IRF expresses concern at heavy death toll in bus accident in Hiamchal

GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY BODY IRF EXPRESSES CONCERN AT HEAVY BUS ACCIDENT DEATH TOLL STRESSES ON NEED OF SAFER HILL ROADS AND SEPARATE TOUGH DRIVING LICENSE FOR HILL DRIVERS AND TOUGH VEHICLE FITNESS NORMS

International Road Federation (IRF), Geneva based global body working for better and safer roads world wide has expressed deep concern at high death toll of about 45 in the bus accident in remote Nerwa area in Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh today.

“India accounts for highest number of road accident deaths and accounts for more than 10 per cent of global road accident deaths. During the year 2015 about 1.46 lakh people died in road accidents in the country. As a signatory to THE UN Decade of Action Plan, reiterated in Brasilia, India is committed to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities by half by the year 2020 “ said Mr K K Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF) .

“The hill roads in the country are prone to regular road accident a lot needs to be done to ensure road safety, especially in higher areas including Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and North East states in the country the government should plan to incorporate the latest technologies and safety features, including installation of soil and slope stabilisation and roadside safety in the hilly terrain infrastructure, crash barriers, intelligent traffic plans, rumble strips, use of speed governors and proper signage’s”. said Mr Kapila.

“ Special separate tough driving license for hill drivers, use of vehicle tracking system, tough vehicle fitness norms and certification and development of safety code for hills should also be adhered to make road travel safe and sustainable on hills” said Mr Kapila.

“Recent announcement by Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways as well as confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to installation of crash barriers and parapets on the entire route of the Char Dham yatra, including Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath, to curb accidents and make the pilgrimage safer is welcome. Road crash barrier systems are used worldwide on highways, especially on hill roads, to physically prevent vehicles from running off the roadway or falling down a steep slope and protect vehicle hitting a road side object. Similar crash barriers should be installed in all hill roads” Said MR Kapila.

“At present, most of the hill roads in the country have been constructed around hill slopes, which remain cut off during heavy rains due to landslides. Construction of well-engineered safe tunnels and long bridges will help in movement of traffic round the year. The Ministry of Road and State PWD’s should focus on engineering safe roads rather than more roads as rectifying faulty designed roads with black spots is more expensive than building safe roads. Similarly, the stress should also be on safe vehicles with higher visibility features, including ABS brakes, reflective tapes on commercial vehicles and mandatory fog lamps on all vehicles,” said Mr Kapila.
