DEMAND IMMEDIATE REMEDIAL MEASURES INCLUDING TRACK BED ISOLATION, SOFT PADS, REDUCING SLEEPER SPACING, AND SOFTENING OF TRAIN SUSPENSIONS

Several Residents of A block, Green Park living in vicinity of Gurgaon -Delhi yellow Metro line have written to the Union Urban Development Ministry as well as Delhi Metro Chief Maghu Singh expressing concern about increased ground vibrations due to passage of trains which are affecting the foundation of the nearby buildings as well as disturbing the people living in the area.

“The increased low frequencies of vibration due to underground metro passing through Green Park in last couple of years is a cause of concern for the residents of A block Green park as these vibrations have a deep negative impact on man made structures , foundation of buildings, sensitive equipment’s as well as human annoyance. This underground track was commissioned five years ago, then it did not create so much of a problem” said Mr K K Kapila, an affected resident of A Block, Green Park , who is also a well known road safety expert and heads an Engineering consultancy organisation.

“The use of Underground metro trains as fast and safe appropriate alternative for passengers is well known world wide. However passage of trains with appropriate speed and train wheels rolling on rail create vibration energy that is transmitted through the track support system into nearby structures. This could cause fatigue in the materials of ground and structure ,crack in walls and other related difficulties. The vibrations need to be controlled urgently lest they continue to damage the abutting structures with slow vibrations and making them weaker every day against possible calamity like earthquake” said Ms Vandana Lakhanpal, another resident of the area.

“Worldwide various technical solutions are suggested and used for controlling the vibrations these include installing Mass Spring System (Track bed isolation) technology, reducing of sleeper spacing, , use of soft pads/mats under sleepers, use of friction enhancing rail fasteners and softening of suspension systems of the trains. This should be mandated for all the ongoing and future underground metro works” added Mr Kapila.
