THE COMPLETE MAN

According to Sir Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626) – English author, courtier and philosopher – “Reading maketh a full man; Conference a ready man and Writing an exact man”. These three words – Reading, Conference and Writing taken together imply Education. The widest interpretation of Education is what you learn from infancy and continue to learn throughout your journey in life even after you have acquired all the literary degrees. Hence education includes the three aspects touched upon by Bacon.

There are three parts to this saying. Let us examine and interpret each independently.

Reading maketh a full man.

One reads books (or e-books on the internet) for a number of reasons. While one may read in order to gain knowledge, another may read to find solutions to one’s problems. Some read novels in order to gain happiness, whereas many read epics and literature to benefit from the philosophical messages (ethics and values), which authors try to convey through their writings.

Some people (especially students) read to learn new subjects and get their doubts cleared. A lot of information is obtained by reading. Students’ vocabulary and grammar improve with reading. If students have to do well in academics, they must do a lot of reading not only from the prescribed syllabus, but must also read relevant topics which will make them well prepared for challenges in life and career.

Scientists, engineers, doctors and researchers have to do a lot of reading on their subject matter (through scientific journals) if they have to keep abreast of the latest technologies and be proficient in their professions. Reference books, theses, dissertation and treatises provide a constant source of learning new ideas, and innovative and efficient ways of doing things.

Reading expands the boundaries of one’s horizon. It creates new horizons for one’s abilities. Reading provokes the tendency to think and explore new possibilities. The power of critical analysis of statements and sayings is enhanced and it enables taking judicious and rational decisions.

People acquire wisdom and intelligence through the writings of great people. By reading newspapers and magazines, they get to know about the current happenings in various fields like international and domestic politics and diplomacy, education in India and in the world, latest inventions and discoveries around the world and factors which influence global environment. Reading helps to improve the reader’s communication skills. Reading serves as a good companion and influences thoughts and actions of the reader. It also enables one to treat defeat and victory alike. Reading inspires us to revel in victory with all modesty, and take failure in our stride, treating failure as a stepping stone to success.

In short, reading develops the personality of a person and during this process, the person learns from others’ experiences and gains in self confidence, thus tending to become full. Hence – Reading makes a full man.

Conference makes a ready man.

Conference is interpreted as debate or discussion. Good debating skills require people to think on their feet. They must be able to comprehend a point quickly, think fast about its pros and cons, and must readily put forth an apt answer. They should be able to accurately pinpoint the root of the issue. This quality will come only when the speaker has an exposure to debates from a young age.

It is only through the practice of conferences that speakers imbibe quick wit and are on an alert to be able to ward off and slip out of uncomfortable situations. Simultaneously they should be able to exploit the opportunities that they get in the course of their discussions. A ready man needs to be an effective communicator and a good listener. He should possess the gift of the gab. He must have the strength of conviction in his speech and have persuasive skills to sway others to his point of view. He should be in a position to challenge pre-determined ideas. Above all, he must have presence of mind, clarity of thought and fluency of language.

A proper conference is one in which the participants come with an open mind either to influence others or to be influenced themselves. A classic example of an improper conference is what we witness daily in a particular TV channel where the anchor bulldozes the panellists by interrupting them repeatedly and putting words in their mouth. Personality clashes are also the order of the day in this channel. Listening – an important part of Effective Communication is conspicuous by its absence. People indulge in one-upmanship. In a democratic conference, debate and discussion must lead to formation of a consensus. To sum up the above, Conference makes a man ready to face any opponent in debate.

Writing makes an exact man.

A writer must be able to give an accurate account in his writing. Once a writer writes something, it will have to stand judgement and criticism for its inaccuracies. A writer will be commended for having written an article or a book or treatise, which is correct and non controversial. He must be able to use precise words or phrases, as it goes on record.

Spoken words can be retracted with an apology. However, speakers who are controversial in their speeches (especially today’s lot of politicians) try to disassociate themselves from what they have said, by saying that they have been misquoted and that the statements attributed to them have been reported out of context. They stand trial by the media and the citizens, but for a limited amount of time, as public memory is apparently short. On the other hand, a writer cannot escape from what he has written, as it is documented and there is intractable evidence. The writer will stand trial for a longer duration from citizens, media, the judiciary and the government.

In writing, the logical flow and sequence of articulation of thoughts must carry the article or essay ahead without deviating from its rational conclusion. Practice (of writing) makes perfect and leads to exactness of the essay by the writer. Hence – Writing makes an exact man.

The complete quotation clarifies its meaning further: “Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man and writing an exact man. And, therefore, if a man writes little, he had need of a great memory; if he confers little, he had need of a ready wit; and if he reads little, he had need of much cunning to seem to know that he knoweth not".

The youth who want to become orators and writers must thus be exposed to reading a variety of books, articles and biographies of great people; be involved in debate and discussion; and possess thorough and focused knowledge of the area under discussion.

Note: For the benefit of the student community and young professionals, Dwarka Parichay publishing a series of articles on truly great personalities who have contributed to nation building. This will be useful to youngsters to know in-depth about our national heroes, who have sacrificed a large part of their lives for the sake of the country. Most of us have never had the opportunity of meeting these people to understand their greatness and qualities that set them a class apart.

Indeed, their lives, with their sincerity of purpose, along with their grit and determination to overcome all odds and their struggles will serve as role models for the current and future generations who, by and large are not aware of the giant contributions made by these truly great heroes in the fields of science and technology, industry, business, etc. The youth will definitely benefit by reading about these giants in their own fields. Even if a small percentage of our youth and students strive to follow the footsteps of these towering personalities, attempt to imbibe a scientific temper and if these articles instill a sense of patriotism among the youth, these articles will have served their purpose.

Zindgi new show ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam’

Prembabu Sharma

Slated to be the blockbuster of the year, Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam is a treatise on life's most precious emotion…love! Unfiltered, raw and something that leaves you wanting for more! Zindagi, India’s No. 1 Premium Channel, promises to showcase this beautiful emotion in its purest form. Premiering on March 23rd 2015 at 8 PM and set in the 1940s, Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam is a heart-wrenching love story that depicts the myriad emotions that people went through then and how love triumphed amongst them all.

There are very few shows that can leave you mesmerized and this timeless masterpiece is one of them. The well-defined characters and the authenticity of the screenplay make this show visually appealing and intriguing. Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam marks the return of heartthrob Fawad Khan yet again to Zindagi as the adoring lover – Hasan. He is paired opposite the charming & talented Sanam Baloch, essaying the role of Bano. It also features an ensemble of legendary and popular actors including Samina Peerzada, Ahsan Khan, Saba Qamar and Mehreen Raheal amongst a host of others.

Commenting on the launch of Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam, Priyanka Datta, Business Head, Zindagi, said,“Showcasing stories that bind hearts is our aim with every show that we launch on Zindagi. Very few television shows have the enduring impact of Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam. The show has beautifully dealt with the intricate emotions of love and separation and the poignancy showcased in the drama resonates even today. It is a never-seen-before portrayal of the essence of true love and we are sure that our audiences will enjoy it.”

Connecting from Lahore, the director of Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam, Haissam Hussaim and celebrated actor, Ahsan Khan who plays the role of Saleem, interacted with the media. Commenting at the exclusive preview screen, Ahsan Khan said, “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam is a period drama set in very troubled times in the history of India and Pakistan. I play the character of Bano’s brother Saleem, who believes that the nation should not be divided. I think the reason this show was a huge hit was because each and every character in the show has been very well defined and equal care was taken while casting and that is what did justice to this beautiful story. It’s a story that depicts myriad emotions that people went through then and how love triumphed amongst them all. I wish viewers in India appreciate this show for the pure masterpiece that it is.”

Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam stimulates the heart, stirs the soul, lifts the spirit and pricks the conscience. Love blossomed between Hasan and Bano even as the riots and bloodshed followed the decisive moment in history. Hasan & Bano come together at the wedding of Hassan's aunt Suraiya (played by Saba Qama) with Bano's elder brother Saleem (played by Ahsan Khan). Fawad and Sanam give their most flawless performances as they get into the skin of their characters.

The story traces their journey from the time they fall in love to the time that they get engaged and then, their worlds start to fall apart. The show highlights the fact that life is not always what is seems to be and reality & hope, although entwined, have starkly different outcomes when fate intervenes. The star crossed lovers are separated by the turmoil around them and torn away from the ones they love. Faced with the harshest situations during their separation, Hasan & Bano finally reunite in a new world which is completely different from the world that they once thought was heaven.

The show has several prestigious awards to its name and promises an intense plot, memorable dialogues and stupendous performances. It’s definitely a must-watch for all ages.

Janasamskriti Dwarka Annual General Meeting on 5 Aprl

Sri Venkateshwar International School, Sector 18, Dwarka, host Street Plays

The street play societies of Delhi University's Hindu College, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies and Drama-Nomics College of Vocational Studies and as a part of the Atelier's ACT Festival Season 8 performed at SVIS, Sector 18, Dwarka on Tuesday, March17, 2015. The performances won many a heart and imbued social messages for all to take home and cherish for times to come.

Sri VIS was one of the only two schools in Delhi, this college fest travelled to and left an indelible mark not only with their messages but an awe and panache with which these young collegiates performed was so brilliant, that they inspired the students to marvel at how theatre can help build a holistic and a confident individual.

The first play titled, ‘Kissa Jaana Anjana’ was performed by the team of Hindu College with its theme of making choices or ignoring options at discretion: a choice to believe in nothing and fall for anything. The second performance was by the students of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College with their play titled ‘Tu Haar Na Maan’ which revolved around the un-noticed theme of suicides in the country, presenting snapshots of the social stigmas, prejudices and stereotypes trapping the society and leading people to fall prey to societal judgements and giving up on their dreams. The third play was ‘Finding Shammi’ by the students of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies bringing to the forefront the phenomenon of ‘religious fanaticism'. It explored tender emotions that have a unique way of surfacing when faced with death of a beloved. The last play, ‘Nabbe Second ki Red light’ was performed by the students of Drama-Nomics College of Vocational Studies, who provided an insight into the lives of the beggars and how they are lured into a life of ordeal and the hardships they face and how the people and the government fail to acknowledge their existence.

With such innovation, the street plays emphasized the need to break the silence and urged all to take a stand and to raise a voice against the social stigmas. The students as well as the teachers enjoyed and appreciated the performances realizing the effectiveness of this medium.

Nrityabharati troupe performd Bharatanatyam at Tirupati

Senior disciples of Nrityabharati, the classical dance wing of Society for Upliftment of National Arts of India (S.U.N.A.INA) along with their Founder-President Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar presented a scintillating ninety minute recital at the holy precincts of Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirupati on 15 March 2015 during the Nadha Neerajanam Festival. It was a dream come true for the Guru as well as her disciples as this was their first ever performance in the holy premises. The entire programme was telecast live by Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel (SVBC).

The group presented a total of five dances, all devoted to the Lord. Commencing with the traditional Naatyanjali dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Saraswati, Vishnu, Shiva and the Guru, the performance continued with Ashtalakshmi depicting the eight forms of the Goddess of Prosperity. This was followed by Shri Tyagaraja Krithi, ‘Jagadaanandaaraka’ portraying the entire famous epic, the Ramayan. The next item was Dashavataar, to the song ‘Devaki Nandana, Nandakumara’, illustrating the ten forms of Lord Vishnu. The programme concluded with Dhanushree Thillana, ‘Brindavan ki Kunj Gali Mein’ dedicated to Lord Krishna. The programme was appreciated by a large and discerning audience which was held captivated by the wonderful coordination, rhythmic and graceful movements and intricate footwork of the artistes.

The entire troupe was indeed blessed not only to perform at Tirupati, but also had Divine Darshan of the Lord on the morning of 15 March 2015, before their performance. The Special Darshan, we are sure, contributed in no small measure in elevating the performance of the entire group and showing their devotion to Lord Venkateswara.

God’s Messenger !

R.D. Bharadwaj “Noorpuri”

Once, there was a rich man from Delhi. Often he remained too busy taking care of his business and family matters that he spent a little time in religious activities. He remained so engrossed and pre-occupied with his engagements relating to various aspects of his business that he could hardly find any time for self. One day, he discussed the matter with his manager and informed him that he wanted to take a few days’ leave from his business activities and go to Haridwar, relax there to his heart’s contentment, free from all the worries, take bath in the cool and holy waters of the Ganges and then return to Delhi, totally refreshed and re-energized. His manager arranged a taxi for his pilgrimage to Haridwar and also booked a room at a luxurious hotel at Haridwar for making his stay there quite comfortable and enjoyable. As per schedule, the businessman reached the hotel of his stay and decided to relax for there for the rest of day, as he was feeling quite exhausted due to the long and tiresome road journey.

Next day, he went to a temple, paid his obeisance to the deity and then ventured out to river Ganga to have a dip there in the cool and refreshing waters. As there were a lot of people taking bath on both sides of the banks, he moved a little away from the hustle and bustle of so many people. Soon he reached a place where only a few people were having fun and frolics with water and he thought that this place is best suited for him to have a bath with complete peace of mind, free from noise of people frequenting that place. He kept his clothes at a place and started taking bath. After he finished taking bath and returned to the Ghat, he noticed a stranger sitting at that place. That man was wearing milk-white dress and his face was radiating with glow, as if that person had no worries, no tension at all, and the businessman thought that this man can provide him the best company and a new scope of befriending such a pleasing personality. Keeping this aspect in his mind, the businessman started talking to him and soon they became friends, as if they knew each other since long.

Then, this businessman from Delhi asked the stranger as to where he was staying? The other man with his pleasing personality replied that in fact, he was new to this place and that he had not, so far made any stay arrangement there. Then the businessman told him, “It shall be my privilege if you could come along with me and be my guest in the hotel where I have booked a room, as it is indeed a pleasant place and in the close vicinity of river Ganga.” After a little vacillation, the other man agreed to his proposal to join him and he assured him that he would try to provide him a memorable company. Thus, talking, discussing and cracking jokes etc. they reached their hotel room. They relaxed there on a sofa for some time. As they were feeling hungry, the businessman called for the waiter and told him to serve some delicious food to satisfy their taste buds, to their heart’s contentment. When they were having food, the businessman from Delhi, asked, “Yaar! We have met around two hours ago, made a good beginning in our budding friendship, but still I do not exactly know you …… ! By the way, what is your name and what do you do?” Hearing his question, the other man kept enjoying the food and posed as if he had not heard anything. Then the businessman again asked, “Since both of us shall be staying together for the next few days and I shall be your host, it shall better if we know each other. I am a businessman from Delhi; my name is C.P. Arora, what is your good name and what do you do ?” As Mr. Arora was insisting, the other man, replied, “It should have been better if you had not bothered about this question. However, as you have posed this question for the second time, it becomes my duty to satisfy the query of my host, you please hold your breath and take it easy……… My name is Yamraj and my job is to take people’s soul to God, once a person has completed his allotted life-cycle on this earth.”

On hearing this, Mr. Arora, became perplexed as if he was shocked with an electric current and the morsel of half-chewed food remained static in his mouth. For a moment, he lost track of words to continue the conversation. However, after some time, he mustered some courage, and then laughed a bit to overcome his actual state of mind and he again said,” You must be joking my dear, how can Yamraj come to earth like this, and talk to someone as a human being?” But the Yamraj replied, ”Believe me! I am Yamraj from Yampuri and the souls whom I take to Yampuri, are full of appreciation about the good affects of holy river Ganga and that is why, I also thought of visiting here and to have a deep dips in the pious waters of this river!” As Mr. Arora was still in the shocked state of mind, felt some relief and he said, “So, you have not come here to take any soul to God!” “Yes! You are right,” Yamraj gave a brief reply. Mr. Arora, had a deep breath and as he was a businessman, he thought of striking a deal with Yamraj. “See Yamraj ji ! As I have already promised, I shall take care of all your needs here, but in return, you will have to make a small promise to me !” And the Yamraj replied, “Yes ! Of course, you please go ahead. I shall see if I can do something for you!” Mr. Arora, looked around in the room carefully and then said,” Please make a promise that you shall never come to my house to take off my soul ……….” But, Yamraj replied,” It is not possible, please note that the Almighty God allots some specific life-span to each and every individual and when that life-span gets completed, he or she however big or small that person may be, he shall have to proceed for his ultimate journey towards God, for which I am His messenger, to take back your soul to Him. That is the God’s will and method to keep this universe in complete and perfect balance and harmony with nature. Please also note that God’s law is final and no changes or modifications can be made in it. However, you can ask for some other concession, which I may consider! “

Mr. Arora, started brooding over for a while and then suddenly said, ”Okay! If you cannot accede to my first request, then please make a promise that before coming to take my soul to God, make sure to drop a letter to me, so that I can complete my remaining works required of me by my family.” Yamraj became a little bit pensive for a while, and then replied, ”Okay! I assure you that I will do this favour to you!” Mr. Arora heaved a sigh of relief and he assured himself that even after his death, he shall not have any work pending, and his family shall not have to repent that so many tasks have remained undone due to my sudden death. As both of them had finished their food by then, Mr. Arora went to the telephone lying in the one corner of that room to order two cups of steaming coffee. After placing the order, when he moved again to return to his sofa, to his surprise, there was no one else in the room, as Yamraj had in fact, just disappeared from the scene. The door and the windows of that room also remained shut. For a moment, it seemed to him that whatever has happened or transpired between him and Yamraj in that room, a short while ago, was perhaps nothing short an illusion.

After finishing his holidays, at Haridwar, Mr. Arora returned to Delhi. He resumed his normal routine of going to factory, attending his office, attending business meetings, visiting his clients etc. and looking after his house-hold chores which required his service from time to time. Six months had passed since he returned from Haridwar that he again started feeling tired as before. Over-work has again started telling upon his health as ever. For the next few months, he felt as if he does not have sufficient energy and got fatigued so soon. His hair had also turned white and his friend, Manmohan advised him to start making use of the hair-dye, as otherwise, he gave the glimpses of an old man. Acting upon his advice, he dyed his hair and felt as if nothing has gone wrong with the time clock of his body mechanism. But his problem did not end there itself. Soon his eye-sight also stared weakening day by day, as many images and pictures just looked blurred to him. His wife, Kamla advised that it is normal with every human being of his age and that he should not worry anything, except consult an eye-specialist. He visited the eye-specialist, who after examining him, advised him to make spectacles to correct his vision and wear those specs regularly. Just a couple of months had passed that he again felt some other problem. He started feeling pain in his teeth and just within a couple of weeks, the severity of pain increased so unbearably that he felt it difficult to chew his food. He shared his problem with his wife again who took him to a dentist. He was some what worried and bamboozled as to what has gone wrong with his health that he faces one problem after another in quick succession. In fact, his health was deteriorating with each passing day. Within a period of next six months, around 50% of his teeth had to be extracted due to pain or cavity in the teeth related problem. Ultimately, the doctor advised him to make a denture so that at least he is able to have his food properly, as without having proper food; it was really very difficult to maintain a good health. He was just sixty but he was experiencing health problems akin to the age group of 70 plus.

His health was going down and down with each passing day that he hardly overcame one problem and another problem took hold of him. Fever, joint pains, back-ache, numbness in one part of the body became part and parcel of his health. Sometimes, even his wife, Kamla feared as if he was nearing his end. He became so weak that he felt as if he was not left with sufficient strength and energy to discharge his normal duties. He started neglecting business. His sons also did not help him to take care of his business activities and make it flourish as before, and spare their father to take proper rest and regain his lost health. One day, when he was stepping down the stairs from his second floor and coming to the ground floor, suddenly he slipped and broke his thigh bone. He was rushed to the hospital and a rod had to be fixed in his thigh-bone and the doctor advised him to take complete bed-rest for two months. Now he was taking more medicine than chapattis daily and he felt let-down by the extremely nefarious designs of nature, which made him an irritating and grumbling person. He would soon lose his temper and burst upon any one who–so-ever came before him. He became so helpless that his plight became pitiable.

One night, when he had completed his day’s quota of taking tablets and capsules etc. and tried to sleep, that he felt some chest pain. He wanted to weep loudly, but his voice just remained choked in his throat. Suddenly, a person in milky-white dress appeared before him and he tried to recognize him. Soon he realized that he was the same person who had met him two years when he was enjoying his pilgrimage to Haridwar. It was Yamraj, and on seeing him, Mr. Arora asked him, “How did you come here?” Yamraj told him that he has come to take his soul, as he has completed his life-span on this mortal earth. But Mr. Arora said, ”How can you do so, don’t you remember that you have made a promise to me to drop a letter before visiting me for this purpose?” Yamraj replied, “Perhaps you have forgotten that I had sent you not only one, but three letters, but you have ignored all those as you became so engrossed in your worldly affairs!” But Mr. Arora again asked, “I did not receive even a single letter and you are talking about three?” Yamraj again replied, ”See Mr. Arora! Firstly, I sent a letter to you when I made your hair white, secondly when I made your eye-sight weak and the last letter was issued to you when you got your denture after losing all your teeth. But, you have failed to read even a single letter……….”

Mr. Arora started thinking seriously as he was under the impression that some postman would come to him bringing letters from Yamraj. And Yamraj understood as to what was going on in his mind, he explained things to him, ”Mr. Arora! God does not send messages through some postman or courier boy, as you mortals normally do. He sends his correspondence to mankind through some implied messages, and it is your duty to comprehend His messages and execute His sweet will. He does not hear any excuses for the human lapses and errors of omission and commission. Now that you have already exhausted your life span on this mortal earth, let us now move fast and reach there; otherwise, God shall punish me as well for being late………..!!” Mr. Arora then pleaded to him, “Sir! I have to find a suitable match for my daughter and marry her off. Please grant some grace period to me to enable me to discharge my honorous duty.” But Yamraj gave a curt reply, “Mr. Arora ! Undue favouritism, appeasement, harassment, fanaticism, avarice, red-tapism, oppression and exploitation etc. are some of the vices which are rampant in Indian society and bureaucracy only, but certainly not in God’s divine affairs !” Mr. Arora remained mouth-gapped, completely dumbstruck and flabbergasted.

Saying so, Yamraj took his soul and left for the Yampuri, leaving behind the family of Mr. Arora wailing, crying and lamenting uncontrollably that he has gone leaving behind so many incomplete and unaccomplished tasks !! He never thought of attending some Satsang and devote some precious moments to understand the divinity of God's small but very important and pertinent messages and paid the price for remaining fully engrossed in the worldly affairs only .............

Congratulations! Saina Nehwal for World No 1 in Badminton

जहाँ पर भय की व्याकुलता, निर्भयता के खड्ग से ;
अन्याय की वीभत्सता, न्याय की सुन्दरता से;
विचारों की संकीर्णता, हृदय की उदारता से ;
अभाव की आतुरता, बुद्धि की विशालता से;

WHAT IS CORRUPTION -- THE GROUND REALITY & HITHERTO UNKNOWN

WHAT IS CORRUPTION -- THE GROUND REALITY & HITHERTO UNKNOWN AND/OR INTENTIONALLY IGNORED FACETS OF THE DEADLIEST DISEASE CALLED CORRUPTION.

Rajendra Dhar

POLICE WATCH INDIA (Regd. NGO).

The causes and effects of corruption, and how to combat corruption, are issues that are increasingly on the national agenda of Civil Rights Activists, Politicians and other Policymakers. Moreover, the very recent Global Financial Crisis has revealed financial corruption, and spurred regulators to consider various meaningful & fruitful anti-corruption measures by way of response.

By contrast, the concept of corruption has not received much attention. Existing conceptual work on corruption consists in little more than the presentation of brief definitions of corruption as a preliminary to extended accounts of the causes and effects of corruption and the ways to combat it. Moreover, most of these definitions of corruption are unsatisfactory in fairly obvious ways.

Briefly How Corruption Plagues Society without any exception to the rule : -

Consider one of the most popular of these definitions, namely, “Corruption is the abuse of power by a public official for private gain”. No doubt the abuse of public offices for private gain is paradigmatic of corruption. But when a Bettor bribes a boxer to “throw” a fight this is corruption for private gain, but it need not involve any public office holder, as the roles of boxer and bettor are usually not public offices.

One response to this is to distinguish public corruption from private corruption, and to argue that the above definition is a definition only of public corruption. But if ordinary citizens lie when they give testimony in court, it is corruption, it is corruption of the criminal justice system. However, it does not involve abuse of a public office by a public official. And when police fabricate evidence, this is corruption of a public office.

In the light of the failure of such analytical style definitions it is tempting to try to sidestep the problem of providing a theoretical account of the concept of corruption by simply identifying corruption with specific legal and/or moral offences.

Sign the petition  to show your SINCERITY to the WORLD...

However, attempts to identify corruption with specific legal/moral offences are unlikely to succeed. Perhaps the most plausible candidate is bribery. Bribery is regarded by some as the quintessential form of corruption. But what of nepotism?. Surely it is also a paradigmatic form of corruption, and one that is conceptually distinct from bribery. The person who accepts a bribe is understood as being required to provide a benefit to the briber, otherwise it is not a bribe, but the person who is the beneficiary of an act of nepotism is not necessarily understood as being required to return the favour.

In fact, corruption is exemplified by a very wide and diverse array of phenomena of which bribery is only one kind, and nepotism another. Paradigm cases of corruption include the following. The commissioner of taxation channels public monies into his personal bank account, thereby corrupting the public financial system. A political party secures a majority vote by arranging for ballot boxes to be stuffed with false voting papers, thereby corrupting the electoral process. A police officer fabricates evidence in order to secure convictions/acquittals, thereby corrupting the judicial process. A number of doctors close ranks and refuse to testify against a colleague who they know has been negligent in relation to an unsuccessful surgical operation leading to loss of life, institutional accountability procedures are thereby undermined. A sports trainer provides the athletes he trains with banned substances in order to enhance their performance, thereby subverting the institutional rules laid down to ensure fair competition. It is self-evident that none of these corrupt actions are instances of bribery.

Further, it is far from obvious that the way forward at this point is simply to add a few additional offences to the initial ‘list’ consisting of the single offence of bribery. Candidates for being added to the list of offences would include nepotism, police fabricating evidence, cheating in sport by using drugs, by bookiesetc, fraudulent use of travel funds by politicians, and so on. However, there is bound to be disagreement in relation to any such list. For example, law enforcement practitioners often distinguish between fraud on the one hand, and corruption on the other. Most important, any such list needs to be justified by recourse to some principle or principles. Ultimately, naming a set of offences that might be regarded as instances of corruption does not obviate the need for a theoretical, or quasi-theoretical, account of the concept of corruption.

As it happens, there is at least one further salient strategy for demarcating the boundaries of corrupt acts. Implicit in much of the literature on corruption is the view that corruption is essentially a legal offence, and essentially a legal offence in the economic sphere. Accordingly, one could seek to identify corruption with economic crimes, such as bribery, fraud, and insider trading. To some extent this kind of view reflects the dominance of economically focused material in the corpus of academic literature on corruption. It also reflects the preponderance of proposed economic solutions to the problem of corruption. After all, if corruption is essentially an economic phenomenon, is it not plausible that the remedies for corruption will be economic ones?

Corruption is not necessarily economic in character. An academic who plagiarises the work of others is not committing an economic crime or misdemeanour and she might be committing plagiarism simply in order to increase her academic status. There might not be any financial benefit sought or gained. Academics are more strongly motivated by status, rather than by wealth. A police officer who fabricates evidence against a person he believes to be guilty of paedophilia is not committing an economic crime and he might do so because he believes the accused to be guilty, and does not want him to go unpunished. A Police Officer and Public Prosecuter hand in glove in trial courts to favour the accused is always associated with bribery. Economics is not necessarily involved as an element of the officer's crime or as a motivation. When police do wrong they are motivated by financial reward, rather than by a misplaced sense of justice. Again, a person in authority motivated by sadistic pleasure who abuses his/her power by meting out cruel and unjust treatment to those subject to his/her authority, is not engaging in an economic crime and he/she is not motivated by economic considerations. Many of those who occupy positions of authority are motivated by a desire to exercise power for its own sake, rather than by a desire for financial reward.

No doubt Economic Corruption is an important form of corruption, however, it is not the only form of corruption.

There are other types of corruption, including many types of police corruption, judicial corruption like keeping matters pending, proceeding on leave on specified dates of hearing and/or avoid passing orders etc .

Political corruption, academic corruption, and so on. Indeed, there are at least as many forms of corruption as there are human institutions that might become corrupted. Further, economic gain is not the only motivationfor corruption. There are a variety of different kinds of attractions that motivate corruption. These include status, power, ego mania, addiction to drugs or gambling, sexual gratification, as well as economic gain. We know of a Bureaucrat who is a gambling addict but he gambles with only those people who in one way or the other have work in the department he serves and for obvious reasons he wins a lot of money every time he gambles with them.

We can conclude that the various currently influential definitions of corruption, and the recent attempts to circumscribe corruption by listing paradigmatic offences, have failed. They failed in large part because the class of corrupt actions comprises an extremely diverse array of types of moral and legal offences.

Some progress has been made. At the very least, we have identified corruption as fundamentally a moral, as opposed to legal, phenomenon. Acts can be corrupt even though they are, and even ought to be legal. Moreover, it is evident that not all acts of immorality are acts of corruption; corruption is only one species of immorality.

An important distinction in this regard, is the distinction between human rights violations and corruption. Genocide is a profound moral wrong, but it is not termed as corruption. This is not to say that there is not an important relationship between human rights violations and corruption on the contrary, there is often a close and mutually reinforcing nexus between them.

There is increasing empirical evidence of an admittedly complex causal connection between corruption and the infringement of subsistence rights; there is evidence, that is, of a causal relation between corruption and poverty. Indeed, some human rights violations are also acts of corruption. For example, wrongfully and unlawfully incarcerating one's political opponent is a human rights violation; but it is also corrupting the political and judicial processes.

HOWEVER THE WORST IS POLITICAL CORRUPTION & THE DAY POLITICAL CORRUPTION IS ELIMINATED IT IS FOR SURE THE ERRANT & CORRUPT POLICE OFFICERS, BABUS’ AND OTHERS WOULD GET REINED IN AND THE DEADLIEST OF ALL DISEASES THAT PLAGUES HUMANS & SOCIETY i.e. CORRUPTION WILL STAND ERADICATED.
