Students of SVIS partake in the Commonwealth Class – Finale Event

Student of SVIS witnessed the Commonwealth Class: Finale Event live from Glassgow held on July 24, 2014 wherein Join Chloe Tilley and John Beattie found out what young people think of the Commonwealth in a special recording of BBC World Service's World Have Your Say. As part of BBC Learning's Commonwealth Class, children from across the Commonwealth were invited to have their say about what it means to be a global citizen.

Here are the musings of our students who came up with their own new ideas about global citizenship…..

Kirti Bhagat of Class XB said : "Be the change that you wish to see in the world", a well said quote by Mahatma Gandhi is like a perfect definition to the word "Global Citizen”. Global citizens are those citizens who act! As we all know that actions speak louder than words, it is the global citizens who make their mark on history like Mother Teresa and countless NGOs. Being a global citizen is all about going in the right direction by valuing others and by opposing any kind of segregation. Anything and everything that happens around the world affects us positively as well as negatively. We won FIFA world with Germany, felt their jubilation of being the winners and the same heartbeat felt the pain of those 298 passengers who went lost their lives with Malaysian aircraft. We are capable of resisting, reacting, repeating and speaking. We know our part; we just have to act on it by endeavoring to be a true global citizen, who is effected by everything that is going around the world.

According to Divyajot Kaur Dadiala, student of Class VIIB, "A Global Citizen is someone who thinks and believes that the entire world is one and his own home. He is a citizen who wants to live in a peaceful world without any wars and I think sport is area which can bring people from across the world together and make them true Global Citizens".

Devanshee Sharma of Class IX A believes, “We are all global citizens. It means we are one. While this citizenship is a birthright, we do have the choice of being contributing global citizens who revel in diversity and seek solutions to the challenges facing our planet or being passive ones who allow others to provide the answers for us. Today the forces of global engagement are helping some people identify themselves as global citizens who have a sense of belonging to a world community. A true global citizen possesses a wide view of the world and the part he or she plays in it. Global citizenship is a way of living that is entrepreneurial and tech-savvy, involves taking risks and encourages critical thinking. Global citizenship is basically thinking and looking beyond the political and geographical boundaries and ideally starts with a very young age. It is forgetting that you belong to one different community, but rather embracing the cultures from all the communities and understanding their worldly scenario. A true global citizen will always have a sense of pride and joy but at the same time will be more concerned and active in all the global affairs. Our generation is quite fortunate that we are being brought up in such a manner that we are open to all the new ideas and embrace every idea with an open mind. We all know that problems around might not be similar but common, and yet the solution to all these problems will remain to be similar. A true global citizen will always be able to relate himself/herself with the world and will also think about the world with himself/herself as he/she would be able to identify and relate to all the problems and challenges that every working citizen has to face. Undoubtedly being a global citizen it is every person’s responsibility to act, make this world a better place and of course prepare ourselves for any challenges that lie ahead or any economic crisis. Thus, being a global citizen definitely means a lot but acting like one is a good way to safeguard the diverse cultures and the future of the world and definitely we cannot turn a blind eye towards any of the problems in the world.”

Vaibhav Gupta of Class VIIIC feels, “The term 'global citizen' refers to being a citizen of the world. Therefore, we shall be respectful, polite, careful, helpful and much more to others living on this world. A global citizen should not differentiate or consider inequality between the men or women. They should consider them as of their own kind, i.e. human, and treat them equally. Though everyone is a 'global citizen' but those who really call themselves so should really prove it by any means necessary. A real global citizen should lead the world, telling them the right path to a brighter side and success. I would like to conclude this topic by telling you all that, that 'global' citizen means to be a person who places his/her identity with global community!

According to Riya Jaggi of Class IXA, “Almighty send man on Earth to spread love, brotherhood, compassion and peace. However, man possessed by the devil of jealousy, hatred and arrogance has created boundaries on the earth and has forgotten his purpose. The time has come to revert back on the path of righteousness. Already science and technology has made our world compact and without a doubt connected various communities, small or big, with each other. Now, all we need to do is imbibe the quality of a global citizen.

A global citizen is someone who is a part of an upcoming world community and his/her actions contribute to the welfare and the progress of that community. As a global citizen, we need to have concern and a share of responsibility of not only what's happening in our country, but also of the planet as a whole. We need to act more humanly and advocate for the human rights, environmental protection and worldwide economic growth. We need to adopt the good, positive and reason from other culture while eradicate the evil form ours. If everyone understands the true meaning of global citizen then conflicts between countries can be avoided and peace, harmony along with prosperity can be promised.”

Astha Suri of Class VIIIA revealed, “Global citizenship, to me means being mindful of the fact that we all live on the same planet and that our actions can have an impact on people in other parts of the world. Global citizenship is the concept of citizenship on a global level. A ‘Global Citizen’ is one who takes into consideration the world as a whole rather than just the immediate world in which one functions. It is a disposition which guides the understanding of individual or groups of local and global context. We should take responsibilities with different communities. We should talk of living as Global citizens. For instance, we do not have the rights to pollute the air or water that we share with others.”

Pratishtha Pandey of Class VIIIB disclosed her views saying, “As a global citizen, I should know that whatever I do leaves an impact on people all around the globe. It doesn't mean that I belong to a particular country, it does not mean that whatever I do will benefit only my country, and rather it will be taken as a good thing ........or a bad thing all over the world. For instance, if we pollute land, water or air shared by the whole world it will not only do badly for our country but all the countries across the globe.”

Mayank Bharadwaj of Class VIIC said, “A global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices. We all are human beings but only few understand how to be a human. To be a global citizen is not only about being human, it’s about being a human living for others. Many of us think that there are many people who would contribute to others life and we will enjoy it. Unfortunately, India is such a country. India has many practices and rituals but many of them are discriminating to our society and also they tell us our differences. We should all be part in making our country and even the world a better place to live and the work does not start from politics, it starts from our understanding to be a global citizen.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF RATIONALITY IN OUR LIVES & HOW IT HELPS US LEAD BETTER LIVES.

Rajendra Dhar
POLICE WATCH INDIA (Regd. NGO).

WHAT IS RATIONALITY?
"THE VIRTUE OF RATIONALITY MEANS THE RECOGNITION AND ACCEPTANCE OF REASON AS ONE'S ONLY SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE, ONE'S ONLY JUDGE OF VALUES AND ONE'S ONLY GUIDE TO ACTION. ... IT MEANS A COMMITMENT TO THE PRINCIPLE THAT ALL OF ONE'S CONVICTIONS, VALUES, GOALS, DESIRES AND ACTIONS MUST BE BASED ON, DERIVED FROM, CHOSEN AND VALIDATED BY A PROCESS OF THOUGHT." - AYN RAND

THE FIRST VIRTUE IS CURIOSITY.
A burning itch to know is higher than a solemn vow to pursue truth. To feel the burning itch of curiosity requires both that you be ignorant, and that you desire to relinquish your ignorance. If in your heart you believe you already know, or if in your heart you do not wish to know, then your questioning will be purposeless and your skills without direction. Curiosity seeks to annihilate itself; there is no curiosity that does not want an answer. The glory of glorious mystery is to be solved, after which it ceases to be mystery.

THE SECOND VIRTUE IS RELINQUISHMENT.
P. C. Hodgell said: “That which can be destroyed by the truth should be.” Do not flinch from experiences that might destroy your beliefs. The thought you cannot think controls you more than thoughts you speak aloud. Submit yourself to ordeals and test yourself in fire. Relinquish the emotion which rests upon a mistaken belief, and seek to feel fully that emotion which fits the facts.

THE THIRD VIRTUE IS LIGHTNESS.
Let the winds of evidence blow you about as though you are a leaf, with no direction of your own. Beware lest you fight a rearguard retreat against the evidence, grudgingly conceding each foot of ground only when forced, feeling cheated. Surrender to the truth as quickly as you can. Do this the instant you realize what you are resisting; the instant you can see from which quarter the winds of evidence are blowing against you. Be faithless to your cause and betray it to a stronger enemy. If you regard evidence as a constraint and seek to free yourself, you sell yourself into the chains of your whims.

THE FOURTH VIRTUE IS EVENNESS.
One who wishes to believe says, “Does the evidence permit me to believe?” One who wishes to disbelieve asks, “Does the evidence force me to believe?” Beware lest you place huge burdens of proof only on propositions you dislike, and then defend yourself by saying: “But it is good to be skeptical.” If you attend only to favourable evidence, picking and choosing from your gathered data, then the more data you gather, the less you know. If you are selective about which arguments you inspect for flaws, or how hard you inspect for flaws, then every flaw you learn how to detect makes you that much stupider. If you first write at the bottom of a sheet of paper, “And therefore, the sky is green!”, it does not matter what arguments you write above it afterward; the conclusion is already written, and it is already correct or already wrong. To be clever in argument is not rationality but rationalization. Intelligence, to be useful, must be used for something other than defeating itself. Listen to hypotheses as they plead their cases before you, but remember that you are not a hypothesis, you are the judge. Therefore do not seek to argue for one side or another, for if you knew your destination, you would already be there.

THE FIFTH VIRTUE IS ARGUMENT.
Those who wish to fail must first prevent their friends from helping them. Those who smile wisely and say: “I will not argue” remove themselves from help, and withdraw from the communal effort. In argument strive for exact honesty, for the sake of others and also yourself: The part of yourself that distorts what you say to others also distorts your own thoughts. Do not believe you do others a favour if you accept their arguments; the favour is to you. Do not think that fairness to all sides means balancing yourself evenly between positions; truth is not handed out in equal portions before the start of a debate. You cannot move forward on factual questions by fighting with fists or insults. Seek a test that lets reality judge between you.

THE SIXTH VIRTUE IS EMPIRICISM.
The roots of knowledge are in observation and its fruit is prediction. What tree grows without roots? What tree nourishes us without fruit? If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? One says, “Yes it does, for it makes vibrations in the air.” Another says, “No it does not, for there is no auditory processing in any brain.” Though they argue, one saying “Yes”, and one saying “No”, the two do not anticipate any different experience of the forest. Do not ask which beliefs to profess, but which experiences to anticipate. Do not be blinded by words. When words are subtracted, anticipation remains.

THE SEVENTH VIRTUE IS SIMPLICITY.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said: “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Simplicity is virtuous in belief, design, planning, and justification. When you profess a huge belief with many details, each additional detail is another chance for the belief to be wrong. Each specification adds to your burden; if you can lighten your burden you must do so. There is no straw that lacks the power to break your back.

THE EIGHTH VIRTUE IS HUMILITY.
To be humble is to take specific actions in anticipation of your own errors. To confess your fallibility and then do nothing about it is not humble; it is boasting of your modesty. Who are most humble? Those who most skillfully prepare for the deepest and most catastrophic errors in their own beliefs and plans. Because this world contains many whose grasp of rationality is abysmal, beginning students of rationality win arguments and acquire an exaggerated view of their own abilities. But it is useless to be superior: Life is not graded on a curve.

THE NINTH VIRTUE IS PERFECTIONISM.
The more errors you correct in yourself, the more you notice. As your mind becomes more silent, you hear more noise. When you notice an error in yourself, this signals your readiness to seek advancement to the next level. If you tolerate the error rather than correcting it, you will not advance to the next level and you will not gain the skill to notice new errors. In every art, if you do not seek perfection you will halt before taking your first steps. If perfection is impossible that is no excuse for not trying. Hold yourself to the highest standard you can imagine, and look for one still higher. Do not be content with the answer that is almost right; seek one that is exactly right.

THE TENTH VIRTUE IS PRECISION.
One comes and says: The quantity is between 1 and 100. Another says: the quantity is between 40 and 50. If the quantity is 42 they are both correct, but the second prediction was more useful and exposed itself to a stricter test. What is true of one apple may not be true of another apple; thus more can be said about a single apple than about all the apples in the world. The narrowest statements slice deepest, the cutting edge of the blade. Do not walk to the truth, but dance. On each and every step of that dance your foot comes down in exactly the right spot. Each piece of evidence shifts your beliefs by exactly the right amount, neither more nor less. What is exactly the right amount? To calculate this you must study probability theory. Even if you cannot do the math, knowing that the math exists tells you that the dance step is precise and has no room in it for your whims.

THE ELEVENTH VIRTUE IS SCHOLARSHIP.
Study many sciences and absorb their power as your own. Each field that you consume makes you larger. If you swallow enough sciences the gaps between them will diminish and your knowledge will become a unified whole. If you are gluttonous you will become vaster than mountains. It is especially important to eat math and science which impinges upon rationality: Evolutionary psychology, heuristics and biases, social psychology, probability theory, decision theory. But these cannot be the only fields you study. The Art must have a purpose other than itself, or it collapses into infinite recursion.

THE TWELFTH VIRTUE IS EXPERIENCING THE VOID.

The twelfth virtue NEEDS A CERTAIN LEVEL OF SPIRITUALISM TO Experience the same hence not enunciated herein.

THE CONSEQUENCE TO ACTING IRRATIONALLY IS THAT IT UNDERMINES ONE'S ABILITY TO ACT RATIONALLY IN THE FUTURE. BY CHOOSING TO ACT IRRATIONALLY, YOU ARE CONFESSING YOUR LACK OF TRUST IN YOUR OWN MIND. THE MORE OFTEN YOU DO THIS, THE MORE YOU WILL BELIEVE WHAT YOU ARE PRACTICING. YOU WILL ACCEPT THAT THE MIND IS IMPOTENT, AND THAT YOU CANNOT MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS. THIS UNDERCUTS YOUR ABILITY TO LIVE, SINCE REASON IS MAN'S MEANS OF SURVIVAL.

WAYS TO BETTER THE COLONIES/LOCAL GOVERNANCE??

Vijay K. Saluja
Director, Giraffe Heroes India Program

Whether some of the readers may agree or not agree with me, but my personal feeling & observation is that Dwarka in Delhi,-a well-planned sub-city, I chose to move in after my superannuation & which many others had carefully chosen to live in, is in a state of civic-neglect!? This inference & conclusion, is also buttressed by the contents of various e-mails, which I, daily receive in my in-box, from many active, committed, dedicated Dwarka residents, whose hearts beat for this Sub-City & who are relentlessly pursuing with the concerned authorities, be it South Delhi Municipal Corporation, DDA, Police i/c Traffic Police, BSNL, Delhi Metro, MTNL & other related agencies viz LG office, CM office, local elected representatives, media etc to get effective solutions to many civic & law & order problems which crop up every-day in almost all areas of Dwarka.

Some of the more active residents have also synergized their energies thru e-groups. I know some of these viz Dwarka Forum, Federation of RWAs of CGHS, Sukh Dukh Kay Saathi, ANHLGT. These are a few of the many civil-society groups which operate in Dwarka. Their members keep spending their energies, resources & time to get the issues/problems addressed adequately in a reasonable time, by the concerned authorities who are actually expected & mandated to keep Dwarka in a well-maintained & proper operational state.

During heavy rains, when the sub- way towards sector 21-22,gets filled up making even commuting difficult/impossible, they follow up with traffic police, DDA, SMCD, when traffic lights at many intersections go blink, causing commuting- nightmares esp at office-going & coming-from, time-they chase the traffic police. When garbage gets piled up, even the Association of the Ladies-ANHLGT, gets into fifth gear. Road cuts, broken footpaths, ill-maintained green spaces, non- working street lights are also the order of the day & the residents & RWA`s keep chasing the concerned civic authorities. But, sadly, their valiant efforts do not get commensurate responses from the concerned officials.!?

The story of civic apathy, neglect & sloth of Dwarka is also the story of almost all the colonies/roads/industrial/commercial areas of Delhi, Gurgaon, NOIDA, Faridabad, infact all cities of India ,with a little difference here & there!?? Huge garbage mismanagement, parking mess, accidents on roads on fast corridors & then in the cities at most of the places huge traffic jams are the orders of the day!!

WE ALL KEEP ON SUFFERING & WILL SUFFER MORE, IN THE DAYS TO COME ,IF NO POSITIVE STEPS ARE TAKEN.

The question comes to my mind is -why the officials of various agencies in whose jurisdiction these civic faults occur & keep on recurring,do not move on their own, in a reasonable time-frame to mend matters.

In our government administrative system , every area of any colony is allocated to some officials of a particular organization , for proper development, enforcement as per laid down rules & regulations, regular maintenance & upkeep at all time. There is organizational-set-up in all the departments for officials/officers to execute various activities & over see the efficiency & work of junior officials/officers by their senior officers. There are vigilance departments in all organisations. If the system had been working as envisaged, then the problems of civic neglect would not have occurred at all, But, the sad story is that not only various civic issues keep on surfacing in almost all the area, but these keep mounting, as the earlier faults do not get attended to, in an adequate manner.

Isn`t it, a clear case of non-performance of one`s duties by some of the concerned officials whose allotted areas, remain ill- maintained?

There could be many other reasons, beyond the control of these officials, too ?!

Lack of motivation or not enough encouragement/guidance by the seniors, deficits in regular skill upgradation of the civic employees, corrupt practices in certain quarters, non-accountability, nepotism are some of the many reasons for the civic neglect. As per my experience with the local government, most of the employees & contractors can perform well & deliver quality work, if given the right conditions/support?!

The government officials are also mandated to efficiently & effectively perform their duties. Otherwise the recalcitrant officials are to be dealt as per the laid down conduct/performance rules of the Govt of India/MCD.State/Local Bodies Acts.

The elected representatives of the area being the representatives of the public need to regularly organize conversations/meetings of the officials with the members of RWAs, Traders Welfare Association, civil-society groups, schools principals, leaders of religious groups, so that there is active community participation & supplementing help to the officials in the area of garbage management, maintainenace of parks /green spaces, water bodies, drains etc etc.

MLA/MP`s allocated funds can/need to be spent judiciously. But, it will, to my mind ,can only be done efficiently, if Corporators, MLA`s & MPs undergo regular training programmes in the areas of budget formation, road/drains/sewers, water distribution network, design, construction & maintenance, etc, to name a few areas.

Role of values & ethics in development & governance is very important. It is my view, that those elected representatives who spend their energies & efforts, in meeting the members of the public, listening to their grievances & helping & solving these , need to have & retain image of honesty & integrity, judiciously spend the allocated funds, become popular in their constituencies & then, I personally feel, they do not have to use money or muscle power ,to get them re-elected.

It is also not understandable that why, of late, in all colonies the public is constrained to see huge bill- boards being put up[at whose cost & under what rules] at various locations, announcing the birthdays etc etc/`Shubh Kamnayeins etc of/to the local elected representatives??!!

I, personally feel, it does not make them popular, this way, in the eyes of the public.

Public Ab Sab Jaanti Hai!!

We all need to also send suggestions for improvement of our cities/neighbourhood to the website `mygovt` launched recently by PMO.

It is also felt that there are many many good persons in all walks of life-political, bureaucracy, corporates, judiciary, academics, media, social activists i/c RTI activists etc etc, who are selflessly doing public good at huge personal risks, at times. Their actions benefit, many, ironically including the ones, who do them wrong!!

The need is to identify them & commend their brave efforts as well, to motivate them in various ways.

Giraffe Heroes India Program, an offshoot of Giraffe Heroes Project www.giraffe.org, with which I am connected, is one such noble Program launched in 2012,in India-the sixth country in the world to have this Program.

Mr. Arya informed Dwarka Parichay that the PIN code mentioned on these boards and elsewhere should be corrected in our own interest.
