IT SUMMIT 2012 On Computing For Sustainability: The Green IT

IT SUMMIT - Computing For Sustainability: The Green IT on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 10.00 AM onwards at Auditorium, LBSIM, Dwarka, New Delhi.

Green computing, Green IT or ICT Sustainability, as defined by San Murugesan, is "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment".

Green IT as a phenomenon is attracting huge attention from large, small and medium businesses alike. Cost pressures, especially during the economic downturns have changed industry dynamics, pushing organizations toward optimization and adoption of green as a strategy and also towards leveraging technology as a means to reduce energy consumption to mitigate the effect of climate change.

Recently, as a nation we all were a witness to the recurring ‘National Grid Failure’. One-fourth of the nation including the national capital plunged into darkness. Millions of people and essential services like ATMs and metro were impacted. Even though as a nation, we claim to be the upcoming superpower with cutting edge technology, yet, we were left powerless and paralyzed. As a nation, we are inching towards an energy-deficient state. With global picture as grim as at home, the increasing costs and depleting energy resources are a cause of apprehension.

IT can play a key role in supporting an organization’s sustainability evolution by using eco-unfriendly business practices and deploying computerized models to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Virtualization and cloud computing ,for example, enable data centers to consolidate their physical server infrastructure by hosting multiple virtual servers on a smaller number of more powerful servers, using much less electricity. Also, as energy issues become more profound, in the future, developers will be forced to expend significant time in optimizing software power consumption, using Lean Development Techniques and High- Performance Computing Techniques.

One thing is certain- Green Computing should firm its root in the Information Technology sector.

Acknowledging this course of development, Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, New Delhi is organizing an IT SUMMIT titled Computing For Sustainability: The Green IT on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 10.00 AM onwards at Auditorium, LBSIM, Dwarka, New Delhi.
