Shri Guru Poornima Mahotsav in Dwarka

Time: from 8.30 AM to 2 PM

1 Million to Ban the Lion Trade

Hundreds of South African lions are being slaughtered to make bogus sex potions for men. But we can stop this cruel trade by hitting the government where it hurts -- the tourism industry.

A global ban on tiger bone sales has traders hunting a new prize -- the majestic lions. Lions are farmed under appalling conditions in South Africa for "canned hunting", where rich tourists pay thousands to shoot them through fences. Now experts say lion bones from these killing farms are being exported to phony 'medicine' makers in Asia for record profits. Trade is exploding and experts fear that as prices rise, even wild lions -- with only 20,000 left in Africa -- will come under poaching attack.

If we can show President Zuma that this brutal trade is hurting South Africa's image as a tourist destination, he could ban and punish the trade in lion bones. Avaaz is taking out strong ads in airports, tourism websites and magazines, but we urgently need 1 million petition signers to give the ads their force.

Sign  and forward

China banned the popular 'tiger bone wine' and other tiger-part medicines because of international outrage -- now traders have shifted their attention to lions' bones. Experts say unless governments act now, lions could be the next in line -- after tigers and rhinos -- to face extinction.

There is a solution: banning and punishing the trade of lion bones and organs. South Africa is currently the largest exporter of lion trophies, bones and organs -- it is also the only African country actively breeding lions in large numbers to supply trophy hunting. But if we can show that allowing this senseless trade can hurt South Africa’s booming tourism industry and make visitors flee, president Zuma could be forced to act. Let’s build a thunderous global roar for the lions. Avaaz will show the cruelty of the lion bone trade with stinging ads all over the world -- sign now and tell everyone about it:

Sign  and forward

Avaaz members across the world have come together to demand strong protection for rhinos, save the world’s bees from poisonous pesticides and achieve huge marine reserves in Chagos and Australia to safeguard vulnerable marine species. Lets come together once again and stand up for Africa’s lions.

With hope, and determination,

Jamie, Alex, Antonia, Mia, Alice, Ricken, Luca, Emily and the entire Avaaz team

Some elements have been promising indeed: Koevermans

Nilanjan Datta

The players had heard about him but had never seen him in person. So when Wim Koevermans met India’s U-22 boys for the first time at a practice session in Muscat, it was a special moment for them. A day later, Koevermans and Technical Director Rob Baan spoke at length to about India’s performance against United Arab Emirates, the coaching philosophy, discipline and a lot more. EXCERPTS:
India’s U-22 players greet National Coach Wim Koevermans at a practice session in Muscat
You watched India take on United Arab Emirates in the U-22 AFC Championship. What was been your impression?
Koevermans: I am quite pleased with the manner things were conducted on the pitch. Obviously, there are areas of improvement. But one needs to remember that the performance came against a strong Nation as United Arab Emirates. We had our moments on the field and could have won it. There were some elements which are very promising indeed.

Rob Baan, sitting next, nodded. He added: “It was heartening to see that boys were focused all throughout. They were passionate to play for their country, though I must admit that the passion at times, was disturbing the tactics a bit. Baan smiled, so did Wim.

What was your perception of Indian football prior to taking over?
Koevermans: There were some similarities in the style of play with Ireland, the last Nation I worked in. But at the International level, the game has changed vastly and we need to implement the same to keep ourselves updated. We need to get accustomed fast and try to develop with a young set of boys.

It was only 16 days of practice that the U-22 squad had under Arthur Papas prior to coming over to Oman. Are you impressed the manner the boys have settled down to the new style of play?
The new style and discipline will take time. There will have to be changes and it always takes time. So we just can’t afford to hurry at the moment. Let’s be patient and the difference will be evident.

You will be officially taking charge from July 1 and the Nehru Cup will be your first assignment. What will your plans stay for the Nehru Cup?
Koevermans: It’s too early to comment on that at the moment. I have some meeting lined up in the first week of July and only after that will I be in a position to dish it out.

With Rob Baan having seen earlier Indian teams from close, it stayed imperative we got his view on the discipline within the squad. Hence he was asked:

In such a Championship, how much of a role does discipline play off the field?
Baan: It’s an unbreakable part. There can be no success without discipline. Look at the Dutch squad as an example. The players need to listen, take proper rest, sleep and at the right time and have common goal. Only then can you think of success. If you don’t have the discipline, the results will be damaging.

Anger blinds reason

His Holiness Yogi Samrat
Dhyanyogi Omdasji Maharaj
Anger is a very strong emotion which flows strongly through us when we are in danger or feel a perceived threat. The threat or perceived threat can be to our lives, property, self respect, image, dignity, power, position, status etc. The natural and immediate response is that of rage. When rage flows through us, we become blind to reason or logic and commit shameful acts without second thoughts. We are also physically affected. Our teeth clench, the blood races in our body, the heartbeat accelerates, face flushes and our hands fist. In extreme anger there is physical violence.

Greed and possessiveness spark off anger. Anger is like a forest fire. A mere spark can burn down an entire forest which took many thousands of years to grow and attain the shape and size it is now. Similarly, in a matter of seconds, there is a spark of insanity and violence and we commit acts by which relationships which are long standing are destroyed in matter of minutes. Most of the times, there is no logic in anger. A parent sees his children fight. The elder one is hammering the younger one. In order to stop the anger and violence of the angry child, the father will raise his voice and his hand too! He does not stop to think what example he is setting. Is it alright to stop anger and violence with more anger and violence? We see such instances regularly in our daily lives and we are also guilty of such offences. A lifetime of discipline and love are thrown out of the window. We are unable to think and we become insane. The story of the monk and the gem polisher teach us valuable lessons in anger management:

Once, there was a Gem Polisher who was religious and charitable. His family offered alms of food daily to a certain monk. One day when the monk was entering the Gem Polisher’s home to collect his daily alms, the King’s messenger also arrived carrying a giant ruby for the Gem Polisher to work on. The Gem Polisher was in the kitchen cutting up some meat and his hands were covered in blood. He accepted the ruby and put it on the table to work on it later. The stone was red with blood from the man’s hands. He then washed his hands and went to get alms for the monk. In the meantime, their pet bird noticed the ruby red stone dripping with blood and thought that it was something to eat. It picked it up and swallowed it before the monk could prevent it from doing so. When the Gem Polisher came back into the room with alms, he noticed immediately that the giant ruby was missing. He called his wife and son and questioned them and the monk about the missing ruby. All of them denied taking it. He assumed that since the monk was the last one in the room with the gem, the monk was the thief.

The Gem Polisher feared the consequences of loss of the giant ruby and decided to beat the truth of the monk. His wife warned him repeatedly that the consequence of doing harm to a noble being would be far more severe than the punishment which would be meted out by the king. The man was far too furious at the thought of theft and betrayal by the monk to listen to his wife. He tied up the monk and beat him up severely and the monk began to bleed from his head. The pet bird noticed the blood flowing from the monk’s head and flew close to see. It received a stray blow from its master and died on the spot. Then only the monk told the Gem Polisher that the bird swallowed the ruby. The Gem Polisher quickly cut open the dead bird and found the gem. He realised the huge mistake he had made in anger and fell at the feet of the monk trembling with fear. The monk forgave him and said he felt no ill will towards him. What the monk had undergone was an old karmic debt and now he was freed.

The monk gives us a fine demonstration of how to face unbridled wrath. There was no way the Gem Polisher would believe that the bird ate the gem and he would surely kill the bird to check the truth. The monk protected the life another being and was gentle and compassionate in his response to the violence of anger expressed toward him. When anger clashes with anger there is only more violence and bloodshed and the problem cannot be overcome. While we may not face such a dramatic situation in our daily lives, we must remember not to respond to anger with anger and hold on to compassion and peace in our response. Then we stand a chance of helping the other to overcome his anger and also get better hold over our emotional disturbances. Let us remember the peace and love of the Lord and hold on to the SitaRam Mantra and overcome our anger.

Teen Diseases

Subhash Chandra Agarwal

It refers to abnormal increase of adolescent diseases in the country. These diseases are result of fast food and fast life of modern era. Authorities should take serious steps to streamline public-life to save youngsters and children from rapidly increasing adolescent diseases. Urban activities should be re-adjusted to restore ancient life-style tuned to famous proverb ‘Early to bed and early to rise, makes people healthy, wealthy and wise’ by restricting night entertainments and telecast of new episodes of TV serials by say 10.30 pm. Since smoking starts as fashion, therefore instead of acting in parts, ultimate step to ban manufacture of cigarettes should be taken.

Cola-companies voluntarily stopped selling cola-drinks in schools worldwide in view of increasing obesity in school-going children. But Indian government failed to notice such harmful effects of cola-drinks and till now allowed sale of disease for children. Union Government should ban advertisements of cola-drinks because of hazardous and addicting effects of these drinks making children diabetic at young age. It is senseless to exempt cola-drinks from printing ingredients on their bottles in name of trade-secret when every packaged food commodity has to print names of ingredients on their packs.

Earlier also, soft-drink manufacturers were asked to remove an oil from their products which was found to be harmful for health. Compulsory printing of ingredients on cola-bottles (including on refillable glass-bottles) will clear doubts about presence of any intoxicant or addicting substance in cola-drinks. Union government and soft-drink manufacturers should revive drinks like old and famous rose-flavoured ones, which can not only replace cola-drinks in India but even dominate global-market by breaking monopoly of harmful cola-drinks.

How to protect yourself from HIV
Hiv/Aids Care and Counselling
People with HIV or AIDS can do a number of things to stay healthy, which is why it’s important to know your status. Although there is no treatment that cures HIV, drugs are now available that can prevent AIDS-related pneumonia and other serious diseases; other medications help the body fight the virus itself. However, many of these drugs may have unintended, harmful side effects.

The only way to be 100% sure you won’t get HIV/AIDS is to abstain from sex and intravenous drug use. If you’re sexually active, using condoms correctly each and every time you have anal or vaginal sex provides the best protection against HIV transmission. While there is not enough scientific evidence available yet to be certain, there are many individuals who also state that they have gotten HIV from participating in oral sex (as givers to infected men). It is advisable to consider using condoms for oral sex as well, especially because other STDs like syphilis and gonorrhea, which can increase your risk of getting HIV, can be transmitted via oral sex.

Satsang - Company of good and pure

Satsang is a Sanskrit word meaning coming together or sanga of those who are seeking the truth, God, Being or Sat and the Self. Satsang is the company of a good person where Sat stands for godliness, and sang , for company. Company of the sants or saints ennobles, educates and 'purifies' us. Purify here means removing from our mind greed, lust, pride, jealousy, vanity and delusion.

On a more subtle level, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar explains that in most everyday activities our minds are separate from each other, we each have separate opinions and thoughts. But when we sing and dance together, we are one. It is a common experience that parties relax you after a hard week’s work, satsang takes this to the next level by being more healthy, and therefore more relaxing.

Vijay K. Saluja

We met,
And I can bet,
The old times,
Just leapt.

We talked,
We laughed,
We were in tears,
When we held high
The glass of beer,
To say cheers!

Cheers for what? You may ask,
School friends had met,
Finally,after a long gap.
Though,we had all the
Time in the world,
To take a long nap!

Why the old friends meet,
Not very often,
As they used to do ,
When they were in college
Or in school,
Is it an act of wise
Or of a fool?

Each one has its answer,
What it is?
It is nothing , if you ask me,
But ego, indifference, lethargy.

We need to strike a balance and be patient: Papas

 Nilanjan Datta

A heat wave greeted the India Team for the U-22 AFC Championship as they landed in Muscat on Thursday (June 21 morning). The boys who have been preparing for over a week at the Al Wasl Campus in Dubai settled down fast as Head Coach Arthur Papas made them sweat in an afternoon practice session at the Sultan Qaboos Complex. In a freewheeling interview with, Papas spoke at length about India’s new style of play, India’s Group, the squad, his philosophy on Jeje Lalpehklua and a lot more. EXCERPTS:

Since the time you took over the team, what are the changes which have taken place?
There have been subtle changes in the overall playing philosophy over the course of two weeks. It’s mostly based on developing a style which emphasises on ideas when we stay in possession of the ball. The idea is to be patient and wait for the correct moment for the build up or for example aim to penetrate from deep.

There are so many variables in football and it's been about guiding the decision making process of the youth players by providing them a structure to work from within.

At the same time we have had to find a balance with this style because you cannot expect to perfect the system in just over two weeks. I have had to take into consideration the current conditioning of the players. I’ve understood the instincts of the boys from the practice sessions and the practice matches.
Arthur Papas with the boys at the first training session in Muscat
Are you impressed with the fitness level of the players as you head into the Championship?
The positive part stays that we have been able to keep majority of the players away from injuries. Apart from Bikramjit Singh who unfortunately picked up a minor ankle strain in our last practice match and unluckily had to miss out, the rest stay in good shape. Obviously we can’t deny that we will also miss some other very influential players who were injured prior to the camp. But the fact that we have been able to re-introduce players like Jeje Lalpekhlua and Deepak Devrani, both of whom are returning from an injury lay-off, I stay content.

Ideally we would like to have been much more match conditioned as we head to the Championship. Our friendly matches have served as a good opportunity to keep learning about our system of play and identify players.

You have insisted upon a new style of play since you joined as Head Coach. During this span of three weeks, how much have the boys been able to adapt to the new style?
I need to praise the players as they have shown tremendous maturity during the short period we have been together. They stay open to approaching the game with an open mind and understanding the various ways it can be played. There are still many areas which need to be improved and this can only be achieved by developing together our ideas with time.

As always I approach a tournament with the intention to win but at the same time I am looking at players who I believe have attributes can develop into Senior National Team Players for India. This means that maybe a slightly older player has missed out on selection in favour of a younger player who I think with exposure to these type of tournaments can further develop and in the longer term and become a better prospect for the Indian National team.

Understandably the draw couldn’t have been tougher for India. What do you expect from the tournament?
We are competing against some very good countries who have really improved their footballing level over the course of 3-4 years. It’s a position we intend to reach in the future. At this stage all our focus stays towards our first game against Lebanon on June 23. This is a critical game and a good start can provide us with optimism to look at qualification.

What’s the status of Jeje Lalpekhlua? How much of a role does he play in your scheme of things?
Jeje is a player I have much respect for simple for the manner he conducts himself on and off the field. He is the type of character you enjoy working with as a Coach. So far he has been slowly re-introduced into full training only since the last 4 days. As I had mentioned earlier, I will not be risking the long term health of Jeje or any other player. They are still young and I maintain that although the short-term success of our team would be a great achievement, it should not come at the cost of any of our talented youth players for the long-term. He has a great future ahead of him and needs the correct guidance to manage his body.

Will this be your toughest assignment so far?
Football assignments are not tough on a grand scale. They are challenging, sometimes rewarding and sometimes soul-searching. There are so many emotions involved and it engulfs your thought process to a level which is hard to be comprehended. It’s an unique 24x7 job.

However, I can't say this is tough when I compare my life to some of the hardships that are a part of everyday life, eg seeing people begging on the streets, homeless and with no money. All that, I consider is tougher. I try my best to keep perspective at all times. I can promise I will give my utmost to help Indian football develop to a level much higher than its current state.

CIC, better not become Toothless

Shailesh Gandhi

As Central Information Commissioners presiding over appeals on the Right to Information Act, my colleagues and I have the same conditions of service and salaries as Supreme Court judges . And yet , on several occasions, public authorities do not obey the orders we pass. When they are faced with action for noncompliance, they rush to the High Court and obtain a stay on our order. My question is simple. Long after the deadline for complying with our order has passed, should a person or organisation that has flouted our order get a stay from any court?

Shouldn’t there be some penalty for violating the orders we pass? If not, what value are our orders? Those who violate our orders get legal protection. If the orders of the Central Information Commission can be flouted so blatantly, should not the service conditions and salaries of the Central Information Commissioners be equal to that of a session’s judge?

This is not simply a problem unique to the Central Information Commission. This is the case with orders given by many other statutory authorities as well. For a long while, I have been thinking about this convoluted practice by which an order passed by an authority is first violated and then stayed in the High Court. If anyone,-a citizen, institution or government department,-does not obey a legally valid order, it should invite some punishment. Should those who violate legal orders be allowed to go scot free? When the Court grants a stay on our original order after the order has been violated, it amounts to providing the fig leaf of legal sanctity to an illegal action. When granting such stays, the High Court usually does not give any reasons for doing so.

This means that there is no evidence of any justification for protecting those who defy the law and act in a lawless manner. The lawyers who help obtain a stay in the High Courts are known to charge a whopping Rs 1-5 lakh for a single appearance. I strongly feel that any action by an instrument of the State which diminishes respect for the rule of law must be stopped. What is the legal basis is as laid down by the Supreme Court for these postulates? I trawled through several Supreme Court orders and found that the country’s apex court appears to be similar to my contention. Take for instance a Supreme Court order passed in August 2004 which says, “If any party concerned is aggrieved by the order which in its opinion is wrong or against rules or its implementation is neither practicable nor feasible, it should always either approach t h e Court that passed  the order or  invoke jurisdiction of the Appellate Court. Rightness or wrongness of the order can not be urged in contempt proceedings. Right or wrong the order has to be obeyed. Flouting an order of the Court would render the party liable for contempt. While dealing with an application for contempt the Court can not traverse beyond the order, noncompliance of which is all eged. In other words, it cannot say what should not have been done or what should have been done. It cannot traverse beyond the order. It can not test correctness or otherwise of the order or give additional direction or delete any direction. That would be exercising review jurisdiction while dealing with an application for initiation of contempt proceedings. The same would be impermissible and indefensible.” I think it is logical to deduce from this, that if flouting an order invites contempt proceedings, a stay on the order, obtained after flouting it, has no legal basis. Such a stay is not in the interest of nurturing respect for the law. Another Supreme Court order passed in 2002 states almost the same thing. Eight years ago, Justice SN Variava, in the Supreme Court made it clear that unless there is a stay obtained from a higher forum, the mere act of filing an appeal or revision will not entitle a person who is required to pay the penalty to not comply with the order of the lower forum. I think it’s self evident that no organ of the State can allow or encourage the defiance of orders of a statutory authority. If this is allowed to happen, it will be impossible for the state to function. If it makes no difference whether an order passed by bodies like the CIC is followed or flouted, what purpose does it serve to pass orders in the first place? Should the Nation even have such bodies?

I hope that, in a democracy like India, there can be a public discussion on this matter and the judiciary would consider not granting stays on orders when anyone approaches it after defying a legally valid order. If there are strong reasons for granting such a stay, they must be provided in the order. Our present practice in the Courts favours those who can spend money on hiring lawyers. Perhaps we could change it to favour the rule of law. Only respect for Courts will not make a better law-abiding Nation; respect for the law will.

Love me when I least deserve it, because that's when I need it the most!

P.J. Thomas

A couple made a deal the night of their Marriage to “NOT open the door of their room to anybody who comes knocking in the morning for whatever reasons!”

In the morning the parents of the husband came & knocked on the door. Husband and wife looked at each other and as they agreed before, they didn't open the door.

After a while the parents of the bride came knocking at the door to check on them. Once again the couple looked at each other, then the bride dropped a tear and started crying and said: "I cannot keep them knocking and not open the door, I miss them already…" Husband didn't say anything and he let her open the door for her parents.

Years passed and the couple had 5 children. The first four were boys and the 5th was a girl. When she was born the father was extremely happy that Almighty blessed him with a baby girl and he threw a Huge Party to celebrate the occasion. Friends and relatives were so amazed with his joy & happiness that they asked him, “why are you so happy with her, more than with her older brothers?!”

He answered simply: "She is the one who will open the door for me!"

Baby girls are the comfort of the eyes of their father,
and they hold the key to their mother's hearts!

"A Son is a son till he gets a Wife,
a Daughter is a daughter the rest of her Life!”

Good Day and Be Blessed with Caring Children (girl or boy!)

Power: The New Medicine on the Block

Dr K. K. Aggarwal
Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee
President, Heart Care Foundation of India

What keeps the politicians alive? Undoubtedly, it’s the luck that saves him from the militant’s bullet and the wonder of POWER.

It’s the power that makes the heart of these aged politicians beat. The love for limelight and not VIAGRA, gives them that extra horsepower.

Late P V Narasimha Rao, the former Prime Minister, is a sure case for that matter. Ailing with a severe heart problem he strived to fight the elections despite an eminent cardiologist from US repeated instructions for rest. Physically too weak, the yearning for power made him stand in the elections and ultimately become the Prime Minister of India.

Another example is the politician Arjuna Singh, who was sick to the extent of being sustained on the ventilator but lived for many years beyond the hopes, owing the entire credit to the responsibilities that complimented power.

These cases don’t reveal the politician’s lust for power but the proven biological phenomenon of the effect of power among living beings.

It was first observed among chimps. The study revealed that any chimp who was made the leader of the group behaved entirely in a different way from his fellow beings. This was termed as “The Itch of Power”. The biological reason behind this change in temperament was stated to be due to the rise in the secretion of Serotonin (Neuro Chemical). The more the secretion, the more vigour it produces. The increase in the secretion of neurochemicals is spontaneous with the power one

Many studies revealed that most of the U.S. Presidents were different in their tenure during power than otherwise in their later or former years. Human system is such, that limelight brings a potential which radiates confidence and vitality in the individual. Amazingly, speeches over the audio and video media present a personality different from what he is in front of a large udience. Applause from the gathering most automatically gives the individual that spirit and gaiety, which is a characteristic of any man in power.

The crux lies in the human attitude. Power brings positivity into the life ailments. One gets boosted by the strength of his inner self and outlives the diseases and ailments which otherwise are quite prevalent in this physical stature. According to Vedanta, man has been slotted a tenure of 100 years to live. It’s the approach towards life which sails the boat. You may regard your 40 years of age as either 40 lost or 60 more to go!

Choice is entirely of the individual. Positive thinking or an optimist approach towards life is the key word.

Power, power and only power does that wonder. Mr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the former President, was all hail and hearty at age so ripe during his tenure in the highest office of the country. The day he retired, he succumbed to the physical aliments of the body which earlier were overshadowed by the gleam of his authority.

Determination and the nature of responsibilities keep the man going. That’s the very reason why women never outgrow men inspite of their age. It’s the responsibility of the entire household that never lets them retire from their office of power. She outlives the vitality of her retired husband.

Today, as a matter of fact, an ailing father will not succumb to his illness if you bestow upon him the responsibility of getting his daughter married. Such is the game of determination. Your ‘will’
eventually takes you wherever you foresee yourself. This is the sole reason why Vinoba Bhave died on ‘Amavasya’, for he was determined to do so that very day itself.

Determining oneself to achieve whatever is set for and giving life its unedited share of positivity will not only enhance our lifeline but also change the destiny – for life is but the make-up of our own thoughts.
