Music is an art form whose  medium is sound and silence. If you are also resident of Dwarka then you must have heard about Dwarka Kala Sangam. Yes, the founder of this club is no other than Col. Protest against commodification of Women - Jansanskriti Dwarka

Jansanskriti - Dwarka expresses its deep sorrow at the tragic death of the brave young woman who had been a victim of the brutal beating and gang rape on a moving bus in the heart of the National capital. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family.

This is not an isolated incident. Sexual assault cases are the fastest increasing crimes in India. In Delhi there is zero accountability on the part of various authorities for the deteriorating security of women in the capital with the state and central agencies indulging in a blame game. Naturally there has been a spontaneous upsurge fuelled by the outrage against crime towards women.

Today ie., on 30th Dec, there was a protest march in Dwarka, Delhi towards the crematorium where this girl’s pyre was lit. The protest was with basic demands of measures to ensure security, easy access to time bound justice, referring all pending cases to fast track courts, stringent laws against sexual assault and creating social awareness against commodification of women.

However, the insensitive Delhi Police personal did not allow us to enter the crematorium and there was a heated argument taken place between us and the Police Officials. The emotional participants consisting largely women and young girls paid tribute to the brave girl with lighted candles and white flowers at entrance gate of the crematorium.

Candle March for Damini in Dwarka.

30th December, 2012 led a candlelight march in support of the victim of the brutal gang rape in Delhi on December 16th. Residents of Kargil & Akshardham Apartment, Dwarka were joined by hundreds of residents from other parts of the sub city.

Few ladies in the march say,” It is sad that rapists exist, but we think severe punishment should be given to the rapists. So that they should not dare to do this evil.”

The incident which took place in Delhi sparked a nationwide outrage, it was an eye-opener to how vulnerable woman really are in big cities.

The march started from the Akshardham gate near the Amrahie Village and went on toward the Cremation Ground, sector-24, Dwarka where Damini was cremated today morning. The initiative was taken by Sukhvinder Kaur and Jai Bhagwan Kataria.

Where have the statesman gone ?

Dr. Anjali Mehta
1. Why can't even one representative of the Government make the right gesture and step down/ take one definitive action ?? It would set a fine example for others to follow.

For example, if the police commissioner said he was resigning as he felt a sense that something had failed drastically....what a good and reassuring signal it would send us ! Or if the state police immediately sent an internal circular to all departments that all sexual assault FIRs would be recorded on camera at the police station and sexual assault FIR would be filed in presence of higher ranking official (presumably, better educated people would know how to speak to women) forthwith. Or the President urged all political parties to call an emergency session of parliament. Any one start lead with... Is there not one statesman among them ??

2. When we search for inspiring/ reassuring words from our current politicians all we end up with are vague reassurances and sometimes outright drivel (please refer to insensitive comments made by Presidents son, Mrs Dasgupta, Mr Anwar and others... ) . Why can't anyone have the thoughts of a Nehru, Kennedy or Churchill ? Or as Binnie aunty put it so well " If they don't have fine thoughts themselves let them get good speechwriters at least !"

Why do they act like tube lights when responding to critical situations ? If we had a hurricane , would we wait for 14 days to see exactly what damage it had inflicted before doing something ? What of the people dying meanwhile ?

Why must we let that young girl get molested on a bus or a woman be raped and killed by six men in Calcutta while the authorities are getting their act together (or not getting it together in this case ). Is there not one statesman amongst them ??

3. Why did the authorities not give the young brave heart a state funeral with full honour when they knew that was what all would have wanted ? Do they not salute courage and not feel proud of this brave citizen who could summon the courage to give two dying declarations even in her condition ?? Why can't they open their mouths and say what needs to be said when this young girl could speak after three surgeries and the overlying shadow of death ??

Is there not one statesman amongst them ??
How do we get these people to not betray their side of the deal (we elected them in good faith) and act?

Revitalising Indian Democracy by Major General Vinod Saighal

Revitalising Indian Democracy

Vinod Saighal’s book compels attention for several reasons. To begin with the Model for Restoration of Good Government (MRGG), a universal model that he unveiled in October 1995 found resonance around the country and some parts of the world, including the United Nations. It was translated into several languages. There are other firsts in the book. The author has covered an amazingly large spectrum in pursuance of his single-minded quest for a better India. He brings to it a perspective that is original and refreshing. In fact, it is rare to find such broad spectrum analysis from a single source. Many of the formulations would appeal to audiences in countries facing similar decline in the functioning of their democracies.

In a series of talks delivered in 2010, 11 and 12 (Reconciling Coalition Dharma, Good Governance, National Security; Is the Constitution being constitutionally Undermined? Judicial Activism: Panacea, Bane or Boon) the author highlighted the terminal degeneracy that has set in at the very apex of governance. In similar vein he has expressed the view that in spite of the judiciary being accused in government circles of over-activism, in actual fact the judiciary has been reluctant to intervene, merely lamenting the decline in governance in several of their judgments. He goes on to say that had the judiciary been more assertive the present decline in practically all areas of governance could have been arrested much earlier. Relating to hardened criminals becoming legislators, their combined strength in the Electoral College will soon be larger than that of the national parties. Should the present trend continue, by giving a call for unity amongst their fraternity, they could hypothetically place an arch-criminal in the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the not too distant future.

* "The book has application beyond India's frontiers. We are starting an Arabic translation" Dr. Waeil Awwad, Journalist - (The book) highlights the tensions between representative democracy and participative democracy" - H.E. Ruben Ignacio Zamora Rivas, Ambassador of El Salvador

It will be nice to get the Arjuna Award: Syed Rahim Nabi

Debayan Mukherjee

AIFF Player-of-the-Year Syed Rahim Nabi has been a versatile player over the years. In a free-wheeling interview to, the 27-year old admits it feels special to be voted as the Best Player by all the Coaches of the different I-League clubs. At the same time, he maintains that his name should be considered for the Arjuna Award. EXCERPTS:

Whom do you dedicate this award to?
My wife! She has been a pillar of strength.

Besides, I would also like to thank my family the staff and officials of All India Football Federation and the General Secretary, Mr. Kushal Das. I would like to mention that the AIFFofficials have always stood beside me and have supported me. Mr. Wim Koevermans has been special to me simply for the faith which he has bestowed on me. I also need to thank the support staff of the National Team squad.

Were you expecting this Award?
My job is to perform on the football pitch. A footballer shouldn’t expect anything at any given time. I stuck to my task and it feels nice when your efforts get recognized.

But yeah, I’m glad to have received it and feel I deserved it too. This year has been good for me as a footballer. This happens to be my third award of the year -- previously I received the Mohun Bagan Player of the Year Award and Indian Player of the Year from FPAI (Football Players' Association of India).

Given the fact that you’ve been chosen by all the I-League coaches, is the AIFF Player-of-the-Year Award all the more special?
No doubt! This is perhaps the biggest compliment a player can expect for. The fact that all the coaches unanimously voted for me makes me all the more confident. It shows that you are being recognised by the right persons.

Is this the best phase of your career?
On the surface, 2012 has been spectacular for me. But I have had exceptional spells previously. I have played in every position my club coaches (over the years) have asked me too. In that sense, I feel, the recognition could have come earlier as well. But no complaints, I am enjoying the moment.

Throw light on some of your best moments in 2012?
Off the football pitch, 2012 has been painful. First, my wife survived a fatal accident and then destiny struck me. I take life as it comes. The award acts like a balm and is very motivating indeed.

What next for Syed Rahim Nabi?
As a footballer, the target stays to win every match. Apart from that, let me be honest and say that I personally feel I deserve the Arjuna Award. I have served the National Team for long and with distinction. Having said that, I know it’s for the mandarin to decide it.

Kalpataru Day on the 1st of January, 2013

In the Ramakrishna Vivekananda tradition Kalpataru Day is an extremely significant occasion. It was on this day in 1886 when Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna revealed himself as 'Kalpataru' and spiritually awakened a large number of devotees who were present at the Cossipore Garden House on that sacred day. This event is commemorated in almost all our centres to invoke the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna and to pray for the spiritual awakening of the devotees.

We, at the New Delhi Centre, will also be celebrating the event with special puja, homa and a brief talk starting from 7:30 a.m. on the 1st of January, 2013. At the end of puja and homa, there will also be prasad distribution. All the devotees are cordially invited to participate in the function, have Prasad and also receive the special blessings of Sri Sri Thakur.

Yours in service,
Swami Shantatmananda,

Dear Sir,

We (Adarsh Apartment, Sec:3, Pkt:16) are writing to inform you that we/our residents of Pocket-I6, Sector:3, Dwarka, (DDA LIG & MIG Flats), New Delhi are living a miserable life of the best sub-city of Delhi as they have encountered number of unresolved common issues which have not been settled. Apart from that our residents are living before a pool of dirty drain water and with the piled up waste garbage's and with the foul smell.

Out of that one common issue is dark spot at the entrance of our gate and to the service lane. The stretch in question is undeveloped part of service lane. This undeveloped stretch on the left side of our entrance gate is being used for dumping waste/debris and other wasteful items for the last couple of years and is growing day by day.

The whole area is filled with filth and garbage's even animal waste is being thrown in that area. The residents and visitors often complain about the same but nothing has been done by any dept. in this regard.

Kindly take immediate steps, if not, then there is a fear of spread of mass epidemic anytime.

We shall greatly appreciate if any action be taken at the earliest to clean up the mess at the left side of our entrance gate and develop the stretch in proper manner.

With kind regards.

Thanks Dwarka Parichay : P.K. Datta, Naturalist

Dwarka Parichay Team

My moving away from Dwarka to Indirapuram this month end makes me nostalgic about the little I could contribute in the life of this beautiful sub-city which has been a focal point of our interaction some time or the other during my wonderful span of twelve years in the service of Mother Nature (2001 – 2012).

I am indebted to you for your personal support and the words of wisdom which lent guidance and culminated into my being able to summarily contribute to the well-being of the sub-city basically aimed at “Connecting People to Plants … for a sustainable living”.

I would request you to kindly appraise my performance on your own benchmarks by giving a glance to my activities listed overleaf by sparing a few moments of your precious time.

Certainly, all this would not have been possible without your active support always, be it, the Management of CGHS/RWAs, the Principals and Management of Schools, the Print & Electronic media, the Social Welfare Organisations, the Police, Horticulture and MCD and very specially the co-passengers and staff in different chartered buses who helped me in communicating my small handbills to the larger society as Ambassadors of Good Greenwill.

My love for this beautiful sub-city compels me to continue my work and affiliation here. I assure you of my availability at all times and be rest assured that I will be too pleased to be of any service to the cause of good-green-clean-environment of the sub-city. Let us continue to work harder and harder to make Dwarka, a city par-excellence!

Look forward to your continued support to my crusade “Dare to Dream …. Make Dwarka Green” and wishing you and your family Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Prosperous New Year and warm regards.

Giving up Attachment

We are all attached to many things – our books, clothes, jewellery, car, home, friends, relatives, power, property, name, fame etc. This list is endless. When there is attachment to anything, it creates many stresses. We worry about someone else stealing it or damaging it, we dislike that anyone has a better item than us and we wish to always touch and behold the object of our desire. When we are in such a state of mind, it is not possible to empty the mind of negative thoughts and meditate. We are unable to have sufficient detachment to rise above our minds. Such attachment becomes a major hindrance in our path of enlightenment. The following story is about a poor wise man who had nothing but a shovel and yet was unsuccessful in meditation due to his attachment to his single possession:

A boy was born in a family of gardeners. They were poor and just able to manage a living by selling what they grew on the little patch of land they had. When the boy grew up, it was his turn to work on the land and grow herbs, vegetables and fruits. He had inherited a shovel which was his sole possession. He used to clear the land and grow produce. He sold them and took care of himself and his family. He spent any extra time he had in remembering God and meditating. He grew wiser as the years passed by and used his shovel as his walking stick. He was called the ‘Shovel Wise Man’.

The urge to meditate more grew strong in him. So the wise gardener hid his sole possession – his shovel- and went to the forest to meditate. Though he tried very hard to focus on God, his thoughts kept returning to his sole possession. He was worried that someone would locate it and steal it. Finally he gave up the idea of meditation in the forest and went back and got his shovel and started gardening. After some time of mundane life, the driving desire to give up all and get back to meditation became strong. So he hid his shovel and went to the forest. And again he could not get the thoughts of his shovel from his mind. So he became a gardener again. This happened several times.

The wise gardener finally realized that his problem was the attachment to his old worn out shovel. So he took his shovel to the riverbank, closed his eyes and threw it into the river so that he would not be able to locate where it had fallen. Then he shouted in triumph: I have conquered, I have conquered, I have conquered. At that time, the King of Benaras was bathing in the same river. He had just returned victoriously from subduing a revolt. Hearing the shouts of victory, he sent his minister to find out who it was. Seeing the Shovel Wise Man, he asked him: I am a conqueror as I won a battle. Whom did you conquer?

The wise gardener replied: My Lord, your victory is meaningless as it is defeat of an external enemy. The real victory is in defeating the mind and getting rid of unwholesome thoughts and desires. I have conquered the craving of my mind and won that battle. As he spoke, he focused his mind on the water in the river and reached a high mental state. He levitated in the air and spoke out: True victory lies in defeating the enemies within self and in your own mind.

While the King listened to him, he could feel all evil thoughts leave his mind and was very peaceful. So he followed the wise gardener to the Himalayas where the wise man wished to practice meditation. The ministers and the army of the King also followed the wise man. The news reached the city of Benaras and many people also gave up all their attachments and possessions and went to the Himalayas to meditate and attain enlightenment.

The wise man taught everyone the holy states of mind: loving kindness, tender affection for all; the feeling of sympathy and pity for the suffering; feeling joyful at the happiness of others and the balanced calm state in face of trouble and difficulties. All those who came with him attained high mental states over a period of time.

Nothing could have been possible if the wise gardener had not given up the attachment to his one single possession. We all have our own shovels. It can be anything which we are possessive about – our name, fame, children, possession, wealth, looks etc. We must give up our attachment so that we can get rid of unwholesome thoughts in our mind and tensions connected to that object. Only then it is possible to reach high mental states and finally enlightenment. Let us do the SitaRam mantra, meditation and follow the teachings of the Guru and get rid of all the attachments and other vices of our mind.

In the pursuit of our objective of striving for a Crime Free Society we are offering some Tips ON HOW TO AVOID VIOLENT CRIMES. We are sure that you will take every possible step to PUBLICISE THE SAME in the interest of the AAM AADMI & AAM AURAT.

Sexual Assault
1. Use initials instead of first names on mail boxes and phone listings.
2. Never admit on the telephone or at the door that you are alone.
3. It is risky to accept a ride home from someone you have just met.
4. If you decide to physically resist assault, remember that your goal is to incapacitate the attacker long enough to run to safety and get help. For this purpose PEPPER SPRAY is a potent lawful weapon, keep one in your purse at all times.
5. If you have been a victim of sexual assault, call the police immediately. Do not bathe or change clothes or you may destroy evidence.
6. Always Keep *YOUR AREA STD CODE 100* Stored In Your Mobile/Cell Phone For Ready Use.

1. Avoid carrying valuable items or large amounts of money.
2. Always think ahead. For example, when traveling at night, have your keys ready to enter the house or start the car.
3. If your vehicle is being followed, drive in to the nearest Police Station.
4. If you are confronted by a robber, the best advice is to cooperate.
5. If you resist, there is a greater chance that you may be hurt.
6. Always Keep *YOUR AREA STD CODE 100* Stored In Your Mobile/Cell Phone For Ready Use.

Bank Machines
