Delhi to get Science and Technology Park soon

New Delhi: For those who feel Delhi lags behind in science and technology, here is good news. The national capital would soon get a world-class sci-tech park, with focus on IT, nano-technology and bio-technology, on its southwest fringes.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday announced that the park would come up in Dwarka, on a 30-acre land belonging to the Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT), and with the help of NASSCOM, an IT industry lobby, on an initial investment of Rs.200 million.

Speaking at a workshop on 'Strengthening Technical Education through Institute-Industry Partnership' at the Delhi secretariat, Dikshit said: "The proposed Science and Technology Park would focus not only on IT but also on other sectors such as nano-technology, bio-technology among others."

NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Companies) will assist in drawing up a detailed project report. It would take help of Price Waterhouse Coopers, a leading professional services firm, in the IT and infrastructure development of the park.

According to experts, a science and technology park would foster industry-institutional partnerships in the area of advanced scientific research and also help NSIT gain industry expertise to support advance research. It would also help to position Delhi as an important destination for advanced research in science, technology and IT.

Assistant Vice President NASSCOM, Girish Srivastav, said the Detailed Project Report for the park would be completed within 12 weeks.

Besides the park, the Delhi government is to set up two new engineering colleges in this year. One would be situated at Jaffrabad in northeast Delhi and focus on civil engineering, while the other would come up at Okhla in south Delhi to focus on manufacturing.

NSIT, a premier institute under the Delhi government, has graduate and post graduate engineering courses. (IANS)

DMRC to purchase GPS-equipped feeder buses

To make the Delhi Metro stations easily accessible to commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is launching a "Metro Link Bus Service" scheme under which it will purchase CNG-fitted feeder buses and hand them over to private operators to run.

In the initial phase, about 60 Swaraj Mazda and Tata vehicles will be bought by DMRC for operation along 36 routes. The numbers will be increased subject to the viability of the project and decision of DMRC and State Transport Authority (STA), Metro rail officials said.

Each bus will have a maximum seating capacity for 18 to 24 people and a maximum standing capacity of 10. The total length of each route will be 3 km to 15 km and the time schedule will be determined by DMRC on the basis of requirements of commuters and traffic conditions.

DMRC officials said the buses would be handed over to private operators on lease-and-transfer basis. The operators will be required to pay back the cost of the vehicles in five years after which they will become owners of the buses.

The buses will be fitted with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) so that their movements can be tracked. They will also have provision for use of smart cards, which may be made operational at a later stage.

The proposed fare structure is Rs. 5 for a distance up to 8 km and Rs. 8 for a distance above 8 km, monthly passes have also been proposed at the rate of Rs. 450 for distance up to 8 km and Rs.720 for distance above 8 km.

Some of the Metro stations to be covered by these routes are: Welcome, Shastri Park, Vishwa Vidyalaya, Inderlok, Keshav Puram, Netaji Subhas Place, Pitampura, Rohini East, Rohini West, Kirti Nagar, Indraprastha, Subhash Nagar, Janakpuri West, Dwarka Mor, Dwarka Sec-10, Dwarka Sec-11, Dwarka Sec- 14 and Dwarka Sec-16.

Feeder buses to Metro stations, which are already running under STA permit will continue to operate as usual, DMRC officials said.

It is `safe' to lose items on Metro train

Have you ever wondered what happens to your belongings if you ever forget them in a Metro train or any of its stations? The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation not just makes your journey a pleasant experience, it has a proper system in place to ensure that your forgetful nature does not make a big hole in your pocket.

"If a passenger loses his belongings on a Metro train or station it is deposited with the station manager concerned and the passenger can claim it within 24 hours. However, after the stipulated time, such unclaimed items from across Metro stations are sent to the DMRC's Central Lost and Found Office at Kashmere Gate station. The items are stored here for another two months for the claimant to turn up. After this, they are auctioned," says DMRC chief spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

However, items are handed over to claimants only after due verification. The DMRC staff have been provided with a set of questions and the lost item can only be claimed if the claimant satisfies them that he is the real owner. At present, more than 400 items including water bottles, helmets, umbrellas and even ATM cards are lying unclaimed with DMRC.

There have been many instances where belongings including huge sums of cash and valuables returned by the Metro staff. Sample this: Dinesh Paliwal of Najafgarh who forgot Rs. 90,000 in cash at Dwarka More station on April 4, 2006, was returned the money, while Sunil Kumar of Pitampura got his Rs. 2. 15 lakh back that he had lost at Welcome station. Similarly Jagdish Parashar was returned his laptop and Deepak Thakur a demand draft for Rs. 2 lakh.

Traffic Blues

Here are some pictures on Traffic Violations on KM Chowk. Almost 40% of the fours wheelers enter in Sector 12 Dwarka (towards KM Apartment from wrong side) as they have to take a U turn if they are going to either KM Apartment or DDA Pocket 5residential Area.

Just save few feet of distance people put other life in danger and cause a lot inconvenience to others, daily so many times. There have been so many accidents on the KM Chowk itself. Almost All Cycle Riders, and Two Wheeler pay no attention and comfortably go from wrong side. Even Water Tankers (private or on DDA duty) don't care. Many car owners turn on their headlights and go from wrong side, as if turning on their head lights gives them permission to drive on the wrong side and putting others life in danger.

Can anybody do something for this.

And this not only for KM chowk. Ashirwad Chowk/ Ayushman Hospital Crossing is equally bad. People don't pay any attention.

Army Chief lays foundation stone for 648 new apartments for Army personnel

The Chief of Army Staff, General J J Singh laid the foundation stone for a group housing scheme of 648 apartments for Indian Army personnel here on Tuesday.
Under the auspices of the Army Welfare Housing Organisation, the 648 apartments will be constructed in Sectors 22 and 23 at Dwarka, an upcoming suburb in south-west Delhi.

Few takers for DDA plots

ALMOST a month after a hotel plot at the Sarojini Nagar-Chanakyapuri junction was sold for a whopping Rs 611 crore, three hotel plots auctioned by the DDA today fetched just Rs 44.28 crore. Seven other plots which had been put to auction found no bidders at all.

DDA officials said the location of the plots had played a crucial factor. The plot sold last month by the National Buildings Construction Corporation is at a prime location well connected with IGI Airport and the embassies while most of the DDA plots sold today were not “well-located”.

One of those sold was a hotel plot at the Sub-District Centre in Hari Nagar; the other two are located in Vivek Vihar. The 1,500 sq m Hari Nagar plot had a reserve price of Rs 15.62 crore and was bought for Rs 15.65 crore by Gujral Tours and Travels. One Vivek Vihar plot was bought by Perfect Learning Private Limited for Rs 14.644 crore while another was bought by Kunal Food Products for Rs 14.002 crore. The plots are 1,688 sq m each and had a Rs 13.83 crore reserve price.

Two hotel plots at Hari Nagar Sub-district Centre, another two at Vivek Vihar Community Centre and one each at Shastri Park, Rohini and Anand Vihar had no takers. The plot at Rohini Twin District Centre had the largest area of 7,833.57 sq m and the highest reserve price of Rs 131.16 crore; it had found no takers in an auction last December either.

DDA officials say they hope the plots to be auctioned tomorrow will fare better. The plots to be auctioned are two plots in Dwarka, three at the Community Centre, Mandawali Fazalpur, one each at the District Centre, Paschim Vihar and at the Dwarka City Centre, sector 10 as well as two hotel plots at the Mayur Vihar District Centre.

Officials say over a lakh tourists are expected in the capital during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. According to estimates, around 40,000 hotel rooms will be required while Delhi currently has only 10,000 rooms.

Twin use of IGI runways soon

In an ambitious move, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to have both the runways at IGI operational simultaneously all day long in the coming months. The authority had recently increased the timing of twin use from 10 to 12 hours daily in wake of severe choking of air traffic and carriers levying a congestion surcharge.

Airlines say that having both runways operational is the only way of tackling the ever-growing traffic till the third airstrip gets ready by next year.

"We are working out details of how the existing manpower of about 190 air traffic controllers (ATCs) could be used to do the job all day long without overburdening them and causing stress. The new recruits are not currently trained to be deployed in different units like control tower, radar, approach and area controls. They are being trained to ensure cross-utilisation. We will talk to the ATC Guild to discuss how this can be achieved in a mutually beneficial way," said a senior AAI official.

The government is also trying to get the ban on using defence air space relaxed. Twin use of runways when planes have to land from Dwarka side and take off from Jumbo Point area means that a greater separation has to be maintained between aircraft. The reason: A plane can be allowed to take off only after another one has stopped after landing on the other runway due to operational safety reasons.

Air traffic at IGI is constantly growing with new flights being added in the summer schedule. Aviation minister Praful Patel had recently clarified that there was no blanket ban on adding flights but that was to be done only when some free slots are available. As a result, almost all hours are becoming peak hours here. The current daily movement has now crossed the 650-mark and twin usage can allow a maximum of 43 aircraft movements an hour when landing is from Jumbo Point side.

Moreover, with ATF prices and fuel surcharge increasing recently, airlines have become even more touchy about this issue.

"Fuel already comprises nearly half of our operating cost and since all airlines are running into losses, the last thing we want is to waste fuel," said an airline official.

Man attempts suicide near PM’s home

A real estate dealer, Kishori Lal Sehgal, shot at himself today afternoon in front of the Prime Minister’s house on Race Course Road, allegedly depressed over frequent fights with wife Reena. The 42-year-old, who sustained injuries on his chest, was later operated upon at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and is stated to be stable.

Deputy Commissioner Anand Mohan has said Sehgal chose the location near the Prime Minister’s home to “sensationalise the matter”. Officers said Sehgal was inside his parked Maruti Zen when he shot at himself around 2.30 pm. The bullet hit him on the left side of his chest and travelled out of his body through the shoulder blade. Sehgal managed to stagger out of the car before he slipped on the pavement. After the initial confusion from the gunshot had subsided, a mechanic working at the Jaipur Polo Ground opposite the PM’s residence, spotted the semi-conscious man. Sehgal was rushed to the RML Hospital by a police vehicle on duty nearby.

Doctors at the hospital said the injury on Sehgal was severe as he had shot himself from a close range. In-charge of the emergency ward Dr S K Sharma said, “There was a dark black spot on his chest when he was wheeled in. He is stable now.” Police officers found the bullet in Sehgal’s car.

The property dealer was interrogated by officers in the hospital later in the evening. He told them he intended to commit suicide and had even written a two-page note sitting in his car. DCP Mohan said, “He was not getting along with his wife. He said his wife was having an affair with one Jeetu and that the couple appeared in front of the Crime Against Women Cell today to hear a case.” Sehgal had mentioned in the note that Reena had registered a case against him, falsely complaining that he had demanded dowry. His brother Govind Sehgal said, “Kishori had sent me a message on my mobile a month ago saying his wife would only withdraw the case if he paid her money.” The brother added Sehgal was depressed because he had already spent enough on the case but his wife would still not come back.

Reena is separated from Sehgal for more than two months now and lives in Meerut. The couple lived in Dwarka’s Sector 19 earlier. Neighbour Anup Gulia told Newsline that the couple quarrelled frequently and the police had to intervene once or twice. Other neighbours said the couple kept to themselves. A senior police officer said Reena had complained several times to the police. Sehgal was also once detained after such a complaint.
